Why Is Sustainable Development Important?
ByIs Sustainable Development Important? Just ask the Dr.
Why is sustainable development important you may ask? You need only look to Dr. Seuss’s most controversial book, The Lorax. The Lorax was published in 1971 and chronicles the plight of The Lorax, a creature who lives in the trunk of the Truffula tree against the greedy Once-ler who chops them down to make his thneeds (which everyone needs).
In despair, The Lorax declares:
“I speak for the trees
For the trees have no tongues
I speak for the trees
From the top of my lungs”
The Lorax who is routinely ignored is essentially the personification of the environment while the Once-ler the personification of industry. The Lorax has become a popular metaphor for those concerned about human impact on the environment. That very same concern has spurred the necessity of sustainable development. For too long, bottom-line profit dictated the laws. Little concern was given to our natural resources beyond what they could net industry. Sustainable Development picks up where The Lorax left off. Why is sustainable development important? The Lorax says it best:
“I speak for the trees
Let’em grow, let’em grow
But no one listens too much don’t ya know
I speak for the trees
I yell and I shout
For the fine things on earth
That are on their way out
They say I’m a fool to oppose things like these
But I’m going to continue to speak for the trees
I’m going to continue to speak for the trees
I’m going to continue to speak for the trees”
If you haven’t already seen it, take 25 minutes and watch the Dr at his best. Enjoy!
