The Yankees Are Right Where We Belong
By Angela
Yankees celebrate after winning the 2009 World Series.
In honour of #27, we are taking an eco-break to pay homage to the 2009 season of the most storied franchise in Major League Baseball history, the New York Yankees. By #27, I’m referring to the number of World Series pennants the Yankees have won including their latest November 4th 2009. If you are not a Yankees fan, keep moving - there is nothing for you to see here. You might want to check out yesterday’s Green Gazette instead.
“In new Yankee Stadium, World Series title seems right at home” -
New York Daily News
I was one of the lucky ones at the last game played at The Stadium – Andy started it and Mo finished it. At the end, Jeter saluted the fans and promised the ghosts, memories and traditions would come across the street to the new Stadium where we could build on them. It was a magical end to a disappointing season (even though I felt the Torre snubbing was wrong). Fast forward to a year or so after that night in September 2008 and it appears Jeter, not Rollins, could be the real baseball Nostradamus. The ghosts did come across the street along with the monuments, plaques and retired numbers of Monument Park. The traditions and memories followed as well. Bald Vinny and the Bleacher Creatures still do roll call, Freddy is there with his pan (which I have proudly ping-ed), Andy started it and, to Metallica’s Enter Sandman, Mo came on to finish it. What better way to christen the new Stadium than with a 103 win season capped off with Sinatra singing and a World Championship? Hollywood couldn’t have scripted it better.
“Right where we belong” –
Derek Jeter bellows from a stage in the Stadium after winning 2009 World Series.
The new stadium had quite the inaugural season as well. A-Rod came clean, learned to talk less, hooked up with Kate and exorcised his October demons. CC was the big man as promised. AJ was as unpredictably brilliant as expected and Tex quietly did it with his bat and his glove. Nady went down and Swish-hawk came up. We had a kangaroo court, a WWE belt and 50+ whipped cream pies. Jeter passed Gehrig and Mo saved 500. The core four, Jeter, Pettitte, Rivera and Posada, proved they were still the same warriors they were during the championship run in the 90’s. The trophy was raised for the first time in the new Stadium and on the stage were the familiar faces of Jeet, Mo, Andy and Jorge as World Series champs once again. Order is restored in the baseball universe and there was a parade of champions down the Canyon of Heroes to prove it.
If all aligns as planned, I’ll be there opening day when they raise the flag and our boys get their rings as they start the quest for #28. I hear bodog.com already has us favoured for 2010. It’s been a long season so I’d like to enjoy this one first. In the meantime, someone get Girardi number 28 for his jersey so it’s ready to go.
Queue Frank Sinatra.
PS: Rollins - we were being nice. Pedro - we’re still your daddy.

I’m a die hard Yankees fan. This was a special year. From the All Star Break on, they were a force to contend with as a team. They were on fire, relaxed and focused, winning the best record in baseball 103/59. Once the bullpen was stabilized you couldn’t stop the Yankees.I look forward to them defending their Championship next year.
All this done by the way, while on a 3 man rotation in the World Series no less, wow!!
The Yankees have the most home grown players on their roster in all MLB 56% of their players on the 25 man roster 14 are from the farm. Many focus on their payroll, but a lot of the Payroll is retention of players like Mariano,Posada,Jeter,Andy. They have 5 rings,to be fair they command a great salary.
WHEN YOU EXPECT THE BEST FROM YOUR TEAM, YOU DON’T SETTLE FOR ANYTHING LESS!! GO YANKEES WITH YOUR BAD SELVES.

I couldn’t agree more. It was a special season. Our homegrown talent does get overlooked in the all too familiar payroll argument from non-Yankees fans. It was great seeing the core four up on the stage having still played a big role in #27 but it really was a team effort. Our pitching came through and held up under the strains of a 3 man rotation for the play offs. Just a great season - wish I could have been at the parade. Now let’s go back-to-back!
