The Green Macgyver Eco-friendly Crafts - DIY Wine Rack
By
Eco-friendly crafts are not just for kids – they can be fun for older kids as well. This is one of those instances that is both fun and practical. Although not all materials are eco-correct, they do avert items from landfills so it balances out.
Have you ever wanted a small countertop wine rack? Then we have the craft for you. Usually eco-friendly crafts that are not for kids, often seem a little crunchy-granola or hippie-dippy, but this not the case this time. Below is an eco-friendly craft for adults inspired by our friend Rachel Ray - a countertop wine rack.
Stuff you need:
- 6 Small metal coffee cans (just make sure you can fit a wine bottle snuggly in it)
- Heavy duty glue** (glue gun will work)
- Tape
- 2 cans of any colour of spray paint**.
- Old newspaper
- Pencil
** try to use the most eco-friendly options available to you although aerosol anything is ever good. For the sake of repurposing, we’ll go with it.
What to do:
- Collect 6 coffee cans and confirm that the wine bottles fit securely in them.
- Wash and dry them well
- Spread newspaper in a well ventilated or outdoor area
- Place cans face down and spray all around the outside, you want the shiny metal to be intact
- Let dry for 12 hours
- Repeat for second and third coat, until you have a lacquered finish
- After thoroughly dried, lay three cans together side-by-side and adhere tape to the front and back to secure them together
- Repeat that action with another two cans, which will later become the middle of your pyramid
- Fill the cracks in-between the cans with glue
- Allow to dry for an hour
- Lay the middle tier on top of the bottom and with the pencil mark where they meet
- Repeat with the top tier (one can) on top of the middle tier (two cans)
- Put glue inside the area where the pencil marks are so that the tiers will adhere to one another,
- Lay the middle tier onto the bottom tier (thee cans) and the tape them together at their openings, this will secure them while drying
- Repeat with the top and middle tier so that the wine rack is assembled
- Let dry for 3-6 hours
- Remove the tape that was applied to the metal areas
- Touch up any spots from the glue with left over paint
- If you repaint it, let dry for an additional 12 hours
This is one of the few eco-friendly crafts that is both functional and beautiful. Eco-friendly crafts can be customized to compliment any décor. If you have extra wallpaper or paint from your kitchen (or any room you are putting the wine rack in) use it. This is ideal for small kitchens or any kitchen where you would like a few bottles of wine on hand for the holiday season. Eco-friendly crafts like this wine rack make a great hostess gift, as you can customize it for the recipient and can place a bottle of wine in the rack to get them started. Cheers!
