There are many celebrities that have gotten involved in charity projects over the years, one who continues to do some good is pop star Justin Bieber. The Canadian music sensation lived up to a promise that he made on the Ellen Degeneres show to perform at Whitney Elementary School in Las Vegas. Whitney Elementary is a school for underprivileged children. The promise was made in early December and he performed on December 16, 2011 and the episode aired January 4, 2012 on Ellen (see the segment on youtube below).

Justin Bieber Visits the Ellen Degeneres Show

Bieber did not just perform at the school, no he went a step further and donated one hundred thousand dollars to Whitney Elementary. In addition to the monetary donation, Bieber also gave one hundred thousand dollars in toys to the school. After his performance he bravely answered questioned posed by the six hundred fifty children in attendance.  He cheekily answered questions about his weekends with his girlfriend singer/actress Selena Gomez. The advice he gave the kids was “Be nice to each other and treat each other with respect and grow up to be people of character.” This advice must have been given to the teen idol himself, as he is definitely is a person of character.

On why he does what he does the pop star answered “I’m here to bring a smile to these kids’ faces. For me, I grew up and I didn’t have a lot. We went to food banks to get food for me and my grandparents.” It is wonderful to see that he has not forgotten his roots or let his mega success go to his head.

Another donation that Bieber made this past holiday season was the five hundred thousand dollars he gave to the Toronto chapter of the Make a Wish Foundation when he was performing in the city.  A popular wish for kids is to meet Justin Bieber, and the singer has granted 35 of those wishes so far.

Justin has become known for his philanthropy as he donated a portion of  the proceeds from his Christmas album Under the Mistletoe and had Access Hollywood host Billy Bush donate five thousand dollars to the Stratford Ontario food bank after he asked his twitter followers to follow Billy as well. The singer also landed in the number two spot behind Lady Gaga on dosomething.org’s list of “Top 20 Celebs Gone Good for 2011”.

It is refreshing to see someone so young giving back while enjoying the fruits of their labour. It is apparent that Bieber has become a role model to a generation that society sees as “me” obsessed, hopefully many more young people will giveback as a result of his good work. All it takes is one person paving the way to get people involved whether they run a fundraiser for a charity or simply give time. Every little bit helps and we can all do our part to make the world a better place. Bieber’s star shines so bright that he is able to call attention to any cause through his belibers and the media.

On a recent episode of the Marilyn Denis show their tech expert, Nicholas Montgomery, was doing a list of gifts to give the teen in your life for the holidays. Amongst the usual iPod/iPhone accessories, video game systems and books there were charitable gifts. These were socially responsible presents that would make a young adult think about the impact of simple things and the world beyond their daily life.

The first present on the list was something the tech savvy teen could do for others. The holidays are a time when people feel the need to give back, as a way to show how appreciative they are for all they have. Many times it’s money that stops people, especially teens and young adults, from giving to charity. Time is something that anyone can give and getting involved is a great way to give back. There are charities that allow you to help out with just a few clicks of your mouse. Koodo, a cell phone provider, has deemed themselves a hub online that connects tech savvy people with non-profits this is called koodonation.  They call it microvolunteering, as people can give a lot or a little of their time. Non-profits sign up with things they need help with like: logo design, setting up websites, facebook pages, twitter, etc…and koodonation matches them with volunteers who have that skill set and time required.

Another NPO they suggested was charity: water who give people the chance to raise funds themselves through their own activities to help solve the lack of available clean drinking water around the world. This charity helps provide clean water to over 20 million people in 19 countries. As little as $20.00 can provide one person with clean drinking water. This is affordable enough to add to another gift, so they get an item they asked Santa for or wanted for Hanukkah and they are helping others. On average a project costs $5,000 dollars and can give water to 250 people. This might be a great project for an office or school to get involved in this holiday season.

Another gift idea that many may be familiar with is World Vision animals. For example a goat costs $100 dollars. That goat can provide both food and income to an impoverished family. A female goat can give over 20 liters of milk a month and help breed a herd for its owners. For $50 you can pay for a family to receive two chickens and a rooster. The trio can also provide an entrepreneurial head start and nourishment to a family. The two hens can lay eggs not to mention more chicks. Often, families will share the offspring with their neighbors, so this gift can impact an entire community.

These are ways to say thank you for the blessings in your everyday life, and to help make others see the impact they can have on the world. As previously stated, these can be used to supplement a gift or in lieu of a trendy and expensive gadget they don’t need. So when you are finishing up your holiday shopping and are stuck on that hard to buy for person think outside the big box stores and give a socially conscious gift.

Canadian heartthrob Justin Bieber is a teen ambassador for social responsibility.  He recently helped a local food bank in his hometown of Stratford, Ontario by improving Billy Bush’s twitter followers. Those who watch the Ellen DeGeneres show might remember an episode last week when Bieber matched a $100,000 donation benefitting Whitney Elementary School.  Plus, earlier this year, he helped provide clean drinking water to developing communities through charity: water. Heck, Bieber and girlfriend, Selena Gomez even recently rescued a puppy. And this was before the paternity accusations became public fodder.

Bieber was on a press tour promoting his new Christmas album Under the Mistletoe, which was released November 1, 2011. Press tours are generally a rehash of the same questions to different media outlets. The unexpected happened during an interview with Access Hollywood host Billy Bush. It is well known that Bieber’s twitter account, @justinbieber, has the second most followers on the social media site twitter with over fourteen million followers. The title for most followers on twitter goes to Lady Gaga’s @ladygaga account that has over fifteen million followers.

Bush who wanted to “bump up” the number of followers he had, told Bieber that if he asked people to follow @billybush, then Bush would donate five thousand dollars to a charity of Bieber’s choice. Beiber agreed saying that he would like the money to be donated to the local food bank in his hometown of Stratford, Ontario. Justin followed through by whipping out his phone and tweeting “With @billybush doing an interview follow him hes a good guy!”  It is wonderful to see that Bieber, who was put on the spot by the proposition, thought about his local food bank first and foremost.

In a time when almost one million Canadians are using food banks every month, and one in three Canadian food banks don’t have enough food to meet the needs of their community, this donation will do a lot of good. Kudos, to Justin for supporting this local charity.  By the way, that tweet resulted in @billybush gaining over thirty thousand new twitter followers bringing him to a grand total of over one hundred thousand followers.

Viewers of Ellen DeGeneres may have heard of Sherrie Gahn in a September segment about the Whitney Elementary School in East Las Vegas.  The majority of the students attending Whitney Elementary are homeless or from families struggling to keep their homes and put food on the table.  Gahn, the principal, has made it her mission to keep these kids in school and help their families with whatever they need, whether it’s food on the dinner table or paying a utility bill or a Christmas gift for their son or daughter.  Target had already offered to provide a $100,000 donation to Whitney Elementary and on the November 1st, 2011 Ellen DeGeneres episode, Justin Bieber offered to match the $100,000 donation.  Seconds later, Bieber stunned the audience and delighted students by announcing a live performance at their school in December. Check out the youtube video below to see the exciting clip from the show when Bieber makes this announcement.

And here’s another reason to make you a Belieber.  Earlier this year, Bieber asked fans to donate $17 to charity: water for his 17th birthday.  “charity: water is a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. 100% of public donations directly fund water projects.”  Here’s some of what Bieber said on his charity: water page:

“I’m really so grateful for my family, friends and fans — and I believe we can do something big to help bring clean water to people in need. Even if you don’t have $17 to give I just ask you to go out in your community and try and make a positive difference. Even the smallest act of kindness can go a long way.”

As a direct result of Justin Bieber’s socially responsible birthday wish, charity: water received nearly $50,000 and was able to provide clean drinking water to 9 communities, 471 families and 2,357 people.  To date, charity: water has raised over 12 million dollars and served over 600,000 people in developing nations.

Acts of social responsibility from superstars like Justin Bieber help raise awareness of important causes.  His competition for the #1 spot on twitter is no slouch either. Lady Gaga just announced the creation of the ‘Born This Way Foundation’ to “help empower youth and inspire bravery.”  Maybe Bieber and Gaga should launch their own weekly ‘twitter for charity’ campaigns endorsing various philanthropic causes.  With almost thirty million twitter followers combined, Bieber and Gaga could help build awareness across the globe with one simple tweet.  As Justin Bieber himself said, “even the smallest act of kindness can go a long way.”
