Welcome back for another edition of green news weekly featuring a few interesting stories from around the globe impacting the environment. The highlights include: NBC Green Week is on the air; higher American recycling rates will equal more local jobs; and American Idol season 10 contestants participate in a PSA for the Plastic Pollution Coalition not appreciated by their sponsor. On Sunday, November 13, 2011, NBC Green Week kicked off as part of NBC’s Green is Universal initiative.  “Each month, NBCUniversal reaches over 100 million consumers via our 40 on-air, online and mobile platforms. With a portfolio that includes iconic mainstays like the TODAY show, Nightly News with Brian Williams, NBC Sports and newer brands like Oxygen and iVillage, environmental programming takes on many shades of green throughout the year. Twice annually—November’s Green Week and April’s Earth Week—NBCUniversal dedicates a week of programming across all its brands to inform and educate audiences about environmental topics.”  This week NBC programming is also “bringing humor to the environmental movement through great comedy pieces in many of its shows. Catch a laugh with Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’s Eco-Jam and The Recharger superhero skits, Al Gore’s appearances on 30 Rock and The Office’s one-and-only Dwight Schrute as the recycling-promoting Recyclops.”

On Tuesday, November 15, 2011 it was ‘America Recycles Day.’  Adrian Martinez from the NRDC (National Resources Defence Council) attended a press conference and reported some exciting news: ‘Recycling equals jobs.’  This was based on a report ‘More Jobs, Less Pollution’ which “was prepared by the BlueGreen Alliance, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, NRDC, Service Employees International Union, Recycling Works! and the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) by the Tellus Institute.”

The More Jobs, Less Pollution report showed that most of American municipal solid waste can be recycled, reused or composted and currently only 33% is diverted from landfills.  By implementing a national recycling and composting strategy committed to 75% waste diversion by 2030, 1.5 million local jobs would be created while saving water and energy, reducing pollution and combating climate change. A national recycling rate of 75%  “will also significantly reduce our greenhouse gas emissions–recycling 75 percent of our waste is equivalent to shutting down 72 coal fired power plants or taking 50 million cars off the road.“

Sponsors can get in the way of an important environmental message.  Forbes reported ‘Under Pressure from Sponsor, American Idol Pulls Plug on Plastic PSA’ which Treehugger also picked up on with ‘Coca-Cola Wins Again: American Idol Abandons REFUSE Plastic Message After Pressure From Sponsor’.  The contestants from Season 10 of the 2011 edition of American Idol all donated their time for a Public Service Announcement promoting the REFUSE disposable plastic campaign through the Plastic Pollution Coalition.  “Every bit of plastic that has ever been created still exists in some form,” says Lauren Alaina, the runner-up from Idol’s tenth season.  Ms. Alaina further urges people to, “refuse single-use and disposable plastics,” an ethos emphatically reiterated by Haley Reinhart, who goes on to say, “Single-use plastics and disposable plastics are the main source of plastic pollution.”

Forbes also reported “One of the show’s sponsors was very angry at seeing the piece and demanded that the show have it removed,” says Plastic Pollution Coalition executive director Daniella Russo. “When I asked if the sponsor in question was Coca-Cola, they said, ‘You didn’t hear it from us.’ But even before all of this we were told that the PSA could only launch after the American Idol concert tour because Coca-Cola was a sponsor and might get upset.”  Coca-Cola doesn’t offer sustainable bottles for their beverages relying on plastics as a vessel for their popular drinks.  Treehugger also reported this week on November 10, 2011 in a similar (unpleasant) story: Grand Canyon Abandons Bottled Water Ban, After Meetings With Coca-Cola.

And that’s a few tidbits from this past week in the green news.

Good day and welcome (back) The Planet Forward blog on a beautiful summer day here in the Toronto area. During these glorious summer months we’re definitely outside more and on the fourth hour of the Today Show with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb there was a segment about eco-friendly household tips for cleaning in the summer that we thought we’d share.

Cleaning your lawnmower – yes, even your lawn mower needs a good cleaning once and a while because grass, weeds, and dirt can buildup underneath with each use. To clean your mower, you have to take steps to ensure your safety; the biggest one is to unplug the spark plug. The reason for unplugging the spark plug is so the mower won’t just turn on while you’re cleaning. The next step is to get out your ice scraper from its summer hideout. The long handle and sharp edges of the ice scraper will allow you to dislodge grass, dirt, and debris from the blades of the mower and you never have to touch them. Finish your mower-cleaning project by using the strongest spray on your hose nozzle and spray the underside of the mower. Once you have sprayed the mower allow it thoroughly dry before plugging the spark plug back in and using the mower. This simple maintenance will help sustain the life of any mower.

Eco-friendly cleaning - White Picket Fence

Cleaning a (white picket) fence – first hose it down thoroughly. Then mix vinegar and water with a 2:1 ratio in a spray bottle (like in our MIY Green Home Cleaning Kit). Spray the mixture over the marks and then wipe off with a rag. You can also get rid of scuffmarks on your fence by rubbing then with mayonnaise.

Cleaning your BBQ grill – it doesn’t matter if you grill meats or vegetarian fair, your grill will get dirty. In stead of buying cleaners that are chock full of chemicals to get the grime off your grill let’s try something a little more eco-friendly. The best way to clean your grill is to use Coca-Cola and a piece of aluminum foil. Crumple a piece of foil into a ball and dip it in a bowl of Coca-Cola and then rub your cold grill. The cola will eat through the caked on grease and food debris like nothing else will. This is an easy tip because you probably have a cola product already in the house and it’s eco-friendly because you can reuse foil you’ve cooked with (nothing that has touched raw meat and just use the clean side) and you can recycle the foil when you’re finished cleaning. After you have scrubbed down the grill remove it from the BBQ and hose it down to remove the loosen debris.

Cleaning stains on your clothing – two of the hardest to deal with are grass and ketchup/mustard stains. For grass stains, get a toothbrush, dip it in vodka and rub at the stain. Test first on the fabric to ensure it will not cause any colour damage. For ketchup/mustard stains, squeeze lemon juice on the stain and then rub it using the rind of the lemon.

These eco-friendly cleaning tips and tricks are easy to try and the best part is you probably have everything you need in the house. Plus you’ll be decreasing your use of chemical-based cleaning solutions which is good for you and your carbon footprint calculator reading.

Part of living a sustainable lifestyle is reusing or repurposing what you already have. On a recent episode of the fourth hour of NBC’s Today Show, hosts Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford shared some home beauty tips. By repurposing everyday household ingredients rather than buying new beauty products you are reducing your carbon footprint because you are not adding packaging and bottles to landfills. The first tip is a solution to a problem that many people will face this summer: the dreaded sunburn.

kathy-lee-gifford-hoda-kotbeAccording to Hoda and Kathie, you can easily relieve the burn by mixing equal parts vinegar and water into a spray bottle and applying to the effected area. You might think that the vinegar would only add to the burn but by diluting it with water it becomes a salve because it has acetic acid and will help relieve the inflammation.

Another year round problem, that rears its head in the summer in particular is product build-up on you hair causing it to lose its luster and shine. By pouring a splash (WAY less than quarter shot) of vodka into your shampoo (shaken not stirred) and using this once a week will help get rid of product build up, dirt and oil.  The only risk is using too much vodka or too often as it can over strip your hair. It might be prudent to pour some shampoo into an empty bottle and then add the splash of vodka so that you can still use your favorite product every other day without worry.

Do you have dark circles under you eyes? (who doesn’t). Well, there is no need to buy expensive products to alleviate the problem when the solution is hiding right in your pantry: Potatoes.  Potatoes contain a natural skin-bleaching agent that can help lighten those ugly under eye circles. The steps are simple grate the potato, place in a piece cheesecloth and put in a small plate in the fridge where it can drain.  Once all the liquid has been drained, gently (and avoiding contact with the eye) use a cotton ball to place some of the liquid on your under eye and let sit for 20 minutes. After that, place the shredded potatoes on the area under your eyes for 20 minutes. If you do this regularly you will see results in about three-four weeks.

Manicures and pedicures are back in all their glory for summer, and the brightest and darkest colours are the ones that will leave a stain on your nails. The simple solution is to get a soft clean toothbrush and brush your nails with whitening toothpaste. Speaking of Mani and Pedis here are two easy ways to get your hands and feet summer ready. Mix ¼ C water with ½ C oatmeal and massage into your hands. Make sure to concentrate on knuckles, cuticles, and wherever else the dry skin builds up in the summer.  The oatmeal acts as a light exfoliator for the hands and should be followed-up with a lotion to seal in the moisture. For feet exfoliate them with ½ cup of sea salt mixed with 2 tsp of almond oil. This is a more abrasive exfoliator which will work well to get rid of calluses and then seal with lotion once you are done.
