Ecofriendly Living Walls Take Root
Posted by: | CommentsUrban Gardens Make For Beautiful Ecofriendly Living
They’re called “living walls” and in this sustainable age, you’re sure to see them scaling up buildings in your city soon. Living Walls are either free-standing or part of a building, partially or completely covered with vegetation and, in some cases, growing in soil or an inorganic growing medium.
Living walls are sort of a natural extension to green-roofs which is an amazing ecofriendly living initiative gaining popularity in urban cores. Actually, a concentration of green-roofs and live-walls has proven to reduce a city’s summer temperature and reduce heat loss and energy consumption in winter conditions. They aren’t just pleasing to the eye but also to the mind, body and soul especially in dense urban area where trees and an abundance of other landscaping is not possible. Unlike green-roofs which are rarely seen and enjoyed by the public, living walls act as an artistic expansion of the design of a building. Sort of like “live art”. Apartment and condo owners with small patio or balconies can grow herbs and edible greens or create lush vertical gardens with their limited space.
Due to the growing interest in living walls, companies are marketing a variety of different systems that include everything you need to get started. All of them require regular maintenance such as watering, soil adjustments and fertilization. A small price to pay for so much good, so much beauty and so much ecofriendly living.

What about the monetary and carbon costs to you and the planet to create that plastic bottle of water for you? And now, it typically costs over a dollar to get one 500ml bottle of water. And here’s the kicker, only 3 out of 10 plastic bottles get recycled. That’s 70% going to landfills and then waiting 450-1000 years to biodegrade. The numbers are staggering. It’s time to say no to bottled water and choose a stainless steel bottle filled with tap water from home.
I may be revealing my age, but as a child of the 1970’s I know that bottled water was not accessible like it is today. I believe only Evian was available back then for about $4 a bottle and I remember joking about how foolish it was to actually pay for water when it’s free at home. Read More→
