Welcome back to the Planet Forward blog for another edition of our weekly green news highlights. This week: the fight for food labels saying ‘genetically engineered’ so you know what you’re eating; 5 winners of 2012 Green Car Awards from the Detroit Auto show; and 5 awesome Apps for healthy green eating guaranteed to help your sustainable lifestyle.  Just click on the links to learn more.

On January 18, 2012, a new video by Food, Inc. director underscores the need to label genetically engineered food. We have previously reviewed the documentary Food Inc. from filmmaker Robert Kenner and we wanted to learn more about the Just Label It campaign that inspired the video and his participation. The Just Label It campaign “empowers consumers to fight for their right to know what is in their food. The video, “Labels Matter,” is the result of collaboration between the Just Label It campaign and Kenner’s new project, FixFood, a social media platform that aims to empower Americans to take immediate action to create a more sustainable and democratic food system.”  The Just Label It campaign has already assembled 500,000 consumer comments demanding the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) label genetically engineered (GE) foods. The video is an awareness campaign hopes to get one million consumers to comment to the FDA by mid-April. Check out the video at the bottom of this post.

It’s time for the 5 Detroit Auto Show 2012 Green Car Awards.  There are some pretty cool green cars on this list of winners.  For example: “The Can’t Miss Award: Toyota Prius C Hybrid - Americans have already taken to the original Prius, a sluggish, not-too-handsome lump of a car, so when Toyota begins offering the smaller, cuter, cheaper model C this spring, things can only get better. The C boasts an awesome 53 mpg, paint options including Habanero (!), Moonglow (!!) and Summer Rain (!!!) and a base price of around $19,000. Home. Run.”  Other categories included the ‘It Followed Me Home, Can I Keep It? Award’ (Smart), the ‘Maybe Next Time Award’ (Lincoln), the ‘Even Better As An Electric Award’ (VW) and the ‘Money No Object Award’ (Acura).

5 Phone Apps for Healthy Green Eating. A more sustainable lifestyle includes buying locally sourced organic foods.  Now, you can use your smartphone, iPad or iPod Touch to download apps that help you locate and choose fresh produce and local and seasonal fruits and vegetables.  Plus, you can learn about food additives and they’ll teach you what to make with your groceries.  Recommended apps include:  Harvest, Food Additives 2, How to Cook Everything Vegetarian, Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch and Locavore.

I don’t see how anyone can disagree with the Just Label It campaign; consumers should know what they are putting in their mouths to feed themselves and their families.  Are you going to download some healthy green eating apps?  How about those green car award winners?  Comment below and stay tuned for more green news.

Disposable diapers pose a very real concern to eco-conscious parents who want to help minimize waste that’s clogging our landfills. It’s not always easy to make sustainable lifestyle choices as parents are often too busy juggling children, work, and home life to commit to using reusable cloth diapers. That’s where the Canadian company Happy Nappy Diaper Service comes in to make it convenient for you to choose reusable cloth diapers.

The premise of the Happy Nappy Diaper Service is simple; they manufacture cloth diapers, and then drop off a fresh supply to consumer’s houses each week. They also pick up last weeks soiled diapers upon delivery. The diapers are brought back to their warehouse and cleaned for reuse.  Their diapers are made from high performance fabrics. In fact, they are microfiber diapers that have latex free elastic in them. This means that they are safe for babies, as latex is a rapidly growing allergy. This product will help keep a child cool, dry, comfortable, while wearing a breathable and dependable diaper.

For those worried about the laundering process, they are certified phosphate free and do not use LAS based detergents. They don’t use chlorine to whiten or sanitize the diapers. In fact, they “balance the pH levels in the wash to match the pH level of your baby’s skin, which further reduces the incidence of diaper rashes. [Also, they use] cold water detergents because they use less energy than hot water detergents do, making it that much better for the environment.” This means that the laundering process is both safe for baby and the environment, something that is not always easy to achieve.

The choice to switch to cloth is a personal one; however, it should be taken into consideration that the average disposable diaper will stay in a landfill for approximately 500 years.  Over 4 million diapers are disposed of per day in Canada.  And, “an estimated 27.4 billion disposable diapers are used each year in the US, resulting in a possible 3.4 million tons of used diapers adding to landfills each year.”  It’s these statistics that encourage parents to look for sustainable product alternatives.

The Happy Nappy Diaper Service was featured on the CBC’s hit investment series Dragon’s Den. The dragon’s didn’t invest in the company even thought they felt it was a sound business model, because they felt investors were not needed. Arlene Dickinson, a marketing expert, believed that this kind of diaper delivery service will grow in popularity and has the potential hold twenty-percent of the diaper market share. The company has both corporate and franchise locations available in communities in Ontario, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.

Many consumers are looking for environmentally friendly alternatives to everyday problems. It’s with these small changes that people are able to live more sustainable lifestyles and help reduce waste congesting landfills. Kudos to Happy Nappy for giving a viable and convenient option for those wanting to use a cloth diaper instead of the traditional disposable version.

In part 3 of our ‘best of 2011’ series this week, we have our top 3 most popular green posts determined by our Planet Forward blog readers.  Yesterday, in our ‘best of 2011’ we highlighted the top 3 corporate social responsibility initiatives and on Monday, we featured our 3 most popular Meatless Monday vegetarian recipes.  Stories about the environment cover a wide range of topics and our top 3 green posts are no exception.  From pollution to pesticides to upcycling, the broad scope of green subject matter represents the diversity of our readership and their environmental interests.

In 1st place is land, sea and air – how our noise pollution is impacting other creatures.  People are aware about air quality issues as a result of pollutants in the air we’re breathing but we neglect to consider how animals are also suffering from noise pollution.  Crabs lose their ability to avoid predators because of noise produced by oncoming boats.  Bats, owls and birds, are finding noises from planes, construction, machinery and vehicle traffic impacting their ability for survival.  Mating for some species becomes a struggle with some animals unable to communicate because of the increased noise pollution.

In 2nd place, upcycle with 5 unique ways to repurpose your old jeans.  Upcycling involves converting something that is no longer useful to you and transforming it into something new and different with better quality.  Therefore, you’re turning something that would otherwise be thrown away and turning it into something functional and new.  Jeans are often something that get worn out over time but there are some nifty ways you can alter that old dingy pair of jeans into something better, practical and useful.  There really are a multitude of denim repurposing options waiting for your creative crafty hands.

In 3rd place, the top 10 dirtiest foods with pesticides.  Worried about what your produce is being sprayed with?  Me too.  The ‘dirty’ list was compiled by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) who “analyzed pesticide residue testing data from the US Department of Agriculture and Food and Drug Administration to come up with rankings for these popular fresh produce items.”  You’ll be surprised by the very popular (and delicious) produce item that is considered the dirtiest, with up to 56 different pesticides found during the analysis.

And an honourable mention to inspirational eco-friendly quotes from actors, activists and world leaders.  Some of your favourite actors, environmental activists and world leaders offer some words of wisdom on the long-term health and sustainability of the planet.

And that concludes part 3 of our ‘best of 2011’ green posts.  Stay tuned for our best of weekly green news and our top 3 eco-friendly crafts for 2011.
