Holiday Gift Bags Image Credit: threelittlebears.co.uk

As the first full week of 2012 comes to an end, you are probably still trying to clean up the aftermath of the holidays. Repurposing is part of living a greener lifestyle and a great way to keep your New Year’s resolution to be more eco-friendly. Here are some quick and easy solutions for the left over odds and ends, namely gift bags.

Yes, the first and easiest way to repurpose a gift bag is to remove the gift tag from it, and simply wrap another present in it.  However, sometimes bags get torn or look worn on the bottom and edges, so these are six creative alternatives to reuse these gift bags:

1. Turn it into wrapping paper.  By cutting off the front and back panels of the bag you have created two sheets of wrapping paper to be able to wrap smaller gifts with next year. If the bag is a plain colour or not overtly holiday oriented you may be able to reuse them throughout the year.

2. Pieces for the craft bin. Cut out any characters or images on the bag like snowflakes or Santa and place them in a craft bin. These images will be useful for next years Christmas crafts or even a school project. Think of how lovely they will make a scrapbook page look.

3. Make recycled gift tags. Cut out images, but cut them out with some of the background. An example would be while cutting out a Santa cut him out in a circle or rectangle so that they look like tags. You can add glitter to them for a little something special.

4. Make a memory box. Cover and repurpose a shoebox with the pieces of the gift bag. This box is something you can date and put your cards in.

5. Shipping label. When you mail or ship holiday gifts, place a large piece of the bag behind the shipping label so that the box you have to send your present in also looks festive.

6. Packing material. When shipping something, scrunch up the old bags to use instead of packing peanuts. The sides of the bags are made of a thicker quality of paper so they will hold your item in place and help it arrive safely. This is a way to reuse the old bags that can actually eliminate something else.

When repurposing anything it is more effective to think outside the box, or bag in this instance. These are just some simple ideas for how to reduce what you are throwing away after the holidays. Another tip is to try and buy bags that are event neutral like in silvers, golds, blues etc. as they are easier to use for birthdays and other events through the year.  Be creative, have fun, and try to find new ways to reuse what you have. If you have any additional ideas or want to inspire others with your creativity, if would be great if you shared with our readers in the comments.

Welcome back for part 5 of our 5 part ‘best of 2011’ series which includes our most popular eco-friendly crafts accumulated from our Planet Forward blog readers.  To recap, our ‘best of 2011’ series has included our 3 most popular Meatless Monday vegetarian recipes; the 3 top corporate social responsibility initiatives; our 3 most popular green posts and our 3 top green news weekly blogs.  Eco-friendly crafts encourage creativity and individual flair and can be enjoyed by both kids and adults.  We often call it Green MacGyver eco-friendly crafts because (those who remember) MacGyver always turned ordinary into extraordinary with a little craftiness.

Here are the top 5 eco-friendly crafts of 2011:

Reindeer Antlers Eco-friendly Craft Image Credit: kidspot.com.au

In 1st place was the recent holiday-themed ‘How to make Reindeer Antlers, an eco-friendly craft for kids’.  This was a popular eco-friendly craft leading right up until Christmas last week as families enjoyed making cute antlers for the kids in anticipation of Santa’s arrival.  This wonderful reindeer antler craft helps families celebrate the spirit of the season and credit goes to Belinda Graham over at kidspot.com.au.

Our 2nd place ‘eco-friendly craft for binder clip picture frames’ was popular because it’s simple to construct.  You’d be surprised how easy it is to make a picture frame using a binder clip.  In fact, all you need is a simple binder clip, scissors and glue, some leftover wrapping paper, magazine cut-outs or other decoration and suddenly you can create a perfect picture frame that can hold a variety of photo sizes.  Heck they can double as a note holder or place card holder if you want to decorate them for a specific event.

3rd place was our ‘Green MacGyver Eco-friendly Crafts – Vinyl Record Album Bowl, Planter and Wall Art’.  This one is for the adults to enjoy.  Do you have any old vinyl albums kicking around the house that have no value to them (sentimental or otherwise)?  This vinyl album project puts those records to good use and can also make cool gifts for the music lovers in your life.  Plus, it’s multi-function.  It can be used as a bowl, planter or simply a wall art tribute.

4th place was ‘Chinese New Year Lanterns – an Eco-friendly Craft for Kids’. The lantern festival is one of the most prominent parts of Chinese New Year festivities as it officially marks the end of New Year celebrations. The lanterns in this craft are pretty easy to make and the kids can really get creative with decorating them. This craft was courtesy of the folks at kaboose.com.

And finally 5th place goes to ‘Green MacGyver Eco-friendly Crafts – Recycled Gift Tags and Place Cards’.  Another holiday-themed craft this time focusing on reusing the holiday cards you received and recycling them into gift tags or place cards.  This craft is super-easy too.  All you need is holiday cards, scissors and a hole punch and you’re almost done.

And that concludes part 5 of our ‘best of 2011’ eco-friendly crafts.  We hope you enjoyed our ‘best of 2011’ series this week.  Happy New Year!

Part of living a sustainable lifestyle is reusing or repurposing what you already have. On a recent episode of the fourth hour of NBC’s Today Show, hosts Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford shared some home beauty tips. By repurposing everyday household ingredients rather than buying new beauty products you are reducing your carbon footprint because you are not adding packaging and bottles to landfills. The first tip is a solution to a problem that many people will face this summer: the dreaded sunburn.

kathy-lee-gifford-hoda-kotbeAccording to Hoda and Kathie, you can easily relieve the burn by mixing equal parts vinegar and water into a spray bottle and applying to the effected area. You might think that the vinegar would only add to the burn but by diluting it with water it becomes a salve because it has acetic acid and will help relieve the inflammation.

Another year round problem, that rears its head in the summer in particular is product build-up on you hair causing it to lose its luster and shine. By pouring a splash (WAY less than quarter shot) of vodka into your shampoo (shaken not stirred) and using this once a week will help get rid of product build up, dirt and oil.  The only risk is using too much vodka or too often as it can over strip your hair. It might be prudent to pour some shampoo into an empty bottle and then add the splash of vodka so that you can still use your favorite product every other day without worry.

Do you have dark circles under you eyes? (who doesn’t). Well, there is no need to buy expensive products to alleviate the problem when the solution is hiding right in your pantry: Potatoes.  Potatoes contain a natural skin-bleaching agent that can help lighten those ugly under eye circles. The steps are simple grate the potato, place in a piece cheesecloth and put in a small plate in the fridge where it can drain.  Once all the liquid has been drained, gently (and avoiding contact with the eye) use a cotton ball to place some of the liquid on your under eye and let sit for 20 minutes. After that, place the shredded potatoes on the area under your eyes for 20 minutes. If you do this regularly you will see results in about three-four weeks.

Manicures and pedicures are back in all their glory for summer, and the brightest and darkest colours are the ones that will leave a stain on your nails. The simple solution is to get a soft clean toothbrush and brush your nails with whitening toothpaste. Speaking of Mani and Pedis here are two easy ways to get your hands and feet summer ready. Mix ¼ C water with ½ C oatmeal and massage into your hands. Make sure to concentrate on knuckles, cuticles, and wherever else the dry skin builds up in the summer.  The oatmeal acts as a light exfoliator for the hands and should be followed-up with a lotion to seal in the moisture. For feet exfoliate them with ½ cup of sea salt mixed with 2 tsp of almond oil. This is a more abrasive exfoliator which will work well to get rid of calluses and then seal with lotion once you are done.
