Green Your Sunscreen With KINeSYS
Posted by: | CommentsAre you and your family enjoying the warm summer months? If you are then you know the importance of sunscreen for both adults and children. It’s really hard to find a sunscreen that matches your eco-friendly lifestyle, but there is a great option available. Canadian company KINeSYS has an extensive line of sunscreens that are “EcoLogo certified, clean, renewable electricity generated by Wind Power.”
In 2008 KINeSYS “made the commitment to purchase clean, carbon-free electricity generated by Alberta Wind Power to offset energy used in their manufacturing process, warehouse and office. This sustainable power is certified by EcoLogo, North America’s oldest environmental standard.” They feel that by offsetting their usage they are helping combat climate change. Everyone remembers the three R’s from elementary school reduce, reuse, and recycle. These principles are the backbone of trying to be environmentally friendly, and the foundation for KINeSYS’ business model. Their “bottles are 100% recyclable High Density Polyethylene (Bisphenol-A-free). They use cardboard that is a minimum of 40% post-consumer recycled board. The company does not use ingredients that accumulate in the body or the environment and print using vegetable-based inks when available. Beyond that they source and manufacture locally as much as possible to reduce fuel use. Conventional self-powered spray cans may not be easily recyclable due to internal bladders and the pressured container can also present special challenges when traveling by air. KINeSYS products have always used manual, finger-powered pumps. These pharmaceutical-grade sprayers disperse an ultrafine mist without the waste of powered sprays and the negatives associated with continuous style sprayers.”
It is not just the environment this company keeps in mind when manufacturing their products, but also animal welfare. They don’t test on animals and don’t use any ingredients derived from animals. “KINeSYS is a member of the Caring Consumer Program created by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to help eliminate animal abuse and cruelty. KINeSYS has joined over 600 other certified companies who have pledged to end unnecessary animal testing.”

Posted by: | CommentsChef Mark McEwan, owner of such notable Toronto establishments as North 44, One and Bymark is opening a new gourmet grocery store called McEwan’s. A recent episode of his reality TV show “The Heat” was centered on how business owners must now learn to adapt to an eco-friendly business climate. McEwan said “If you’re starting a concept now, how do you not embrace this?” referring to the green movement and the fact that customers expect a business to be environmentally responsible.
The issue in this episode was the great debate on ordering bags: paper vs. plastic. “Being green is very expensive, easy to say, hard to do” McEwan said about the price of an eco-friendly reusable bag over a passé plastic one. The Chef and entrepreneur was brought a variety of bags to look over one of which was an eco-friendly option made of craft paper. This choice would biodegrade more readily, because of the fact that it was free of any additional coatings. “Either your product is biodegradable or it is fully recyclable,” Mark commented on the subject of what his customers expected from a bag. Having said that it would seem to be an easy choice, as this bag would do it all: represent an eco-friendly option and be free to his customers. The only stumbling block was….cost.
The price tag per paper bag is 14 cents vs a plastic bag which would cost less than 5 cents per unit. If McEwan were to choose the craft paper non-coated bag, the price would be over six figures over the course of one year. For a start up business, no matter who the backer is, this is a sizable expense and that money may be better served elsewhere. At the end of the meeting they were going to be looking into the price of reusable polypropylene bags and he was awaiting a price list prior to making a decision. So do we believe that McEwan will make an eco-friendly choice and pick either the polypropylene or paper bags over plastic? Let us allow Mark to speak for himself and get straight to the point “for me to come out with plastic bags would be ridiculous”.
So kudos to Chef McEwan and good luck on this new endeavor and thanks for using an eco-friendly filter in decision-making. As his vision has become reality, you can go to the store and see which possibility won out and read more about it here mcewanfoods.com.

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. is going beyond its recycling programs to become an eco-conscious leader by 2013. On July 20, Samsung announced its “Eco-Management 2013” plan, which includes ensuring that 100% of Samsung products are eco-friendly and exceed global green standards. Their plans also include greening their manufacturing facilities.
The initiative emphasizes increasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions at manufacturing plants, overall lower-carbon economic growth, eco-management plans and developing green partnerships with suppliers.
The management vision, “Creating New Value Through Eco-Innovation,” includes a “Planet First” focus, demonstrating Samsung’s new commitment to environmentally conscious decisions and using technology towards innovation that serves the environment in a better way.
Samsung Electronics’ vice chairman and CEO Yoon-Woo Lee said this new plan applies to all global operations, supply chain, and complete lifecycle of products.
“As a leading global technology company, Samsung Electronics has always taken our environmental responsibilities very seriously, but today we are committing to becoming a truly green enterprise that places eco-management at the very heart of our business decision-making and growth,” he said.
