Archive for New York Fashion Week

Hello and welcome (back) to the Planet Forward blog for an eco-friendly craft Friday with a twist. The “eco” in today’s eco-friendly craft has a double meaning: 1) it is eco-friendly because you are essentially upcycling something you already have; and 2) it is eco-friendly because it is economical.

A highlight of New York Fashion Week was the whimsy of Tory Burch’s shoes. Shoes have quickly become the must have accessory of every season with designers from Manolo Blahnik to Christian Louboutin making their names on fabulous shoes. However, in tough economic times it’s not always possible to buy the latest shoes even if you can find them at a decent prince point. That is why today’s craft is so great because it shows you how you can have the latest fashion trends without spending your hard-earned cash. This is yet another fashion forward craft from P.S. – I made this… creator and founder Erica Domesek on E!News. You should really check out her site if you have a minute – it’s an excellent source of creative inspiration.

What You Need:

  • Pair of shoes with a strap
  • Piece of (complimentary) ribbon
  • Scissors

Directions:

  1. Cut a length of ribbon
  2. Knot the ribbon on the side of the shoe’s strap
  3. Tie a medium sized bow with the ribbon
  4. Make the ribbon neat by cutting the end on an angle

This is an easy and inexpensive way to update your wardrobe because it doesn’t involve a huge investment (or any at all if you have everything on hand) and also because it is not permanent. You can swap out the ribbon anytime you want for another or none at all. When updating shoes using this method, choose ribbon that compliments the color of the shoe like for a monochromatic look, you can add a black ribbon to black shoes.

When dealing with a printed shoe it might be best to pick out one of the accent colors (like in the photo). Don’t be afraid of adding a bow to shoes that is bright as Burch had bows in mustard and pinks. Not only can a shoe add a pop of color to an outfit, but it’s a great way to dress up a classic look and make it modern.

So if you appreciate a good eco-friendly craft (in either meaning) this is a perfect way to (temporarily) update your shoes for the season.

Hello and welcome (back) to the Planet Forward blog for an eco-friendly fashionista craft Friday. Being fashionable does not mean you can’t be eco-friendly or a bit of a DIY’er. That is why we are showing you how to get a runway inspired look that repurposes that old black tank top in your closet. We are using Oscar de la Renta’s spring 2012 black silk georgette white tassel embroidered dress as the inspiration for an uber cute tank top. This fashion forward DIY craft came from P.S. – I made this… creator and founder Erica Domesek on enews.  If you can sew on a button you can make this top. If you can’t sew a button, it’s worth learning. Let’s get started.

Eco-friend fashion craft

What You Need:

  • Chalk
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • 10-14 tassels

Directions:

  1. Lay out your tank top on a table.
  2. Space the tassels on the shirt in a rows. Alternate between rows of three and four tassels you’ll need to make three to four rows depending on the length of the top. Space the tassels in-between each other as de la Renta with the original dress.
  3. Take the chalk and mark where the tassels are so you know where to sew them.
  4. Adhere the tassels where you placed the chalk mark using you stitches through the top of the tassel.

When making this craft you should know that tassels come with a loop on the top so just snip it off after sewing.  Pick white or cream tassels so they stand out against the black tank top. If you really like this look then you might want to experiment with different colour tank tops and tassels. However, the black and white gives the top a classic look that would work under your favorite blazer or wrap when going out for dinner or drinks.

If you can’t sew you can cheat by using your trusty glue gun or no-sew iron-on tape. Yes, you probably will need to buy tassels, but you are reusing the tank top and creating a whimsical, one-of-a-kind piece.

The next time you see a look on the runway that you love, get creative and see how you can replicate it yourself. This goes to show that you can be runway ready on a budget while still being eco-friendly.

Viva la DIY fashionista! Now go check out P.S. – I made this…

Hello and welcome (back) to the Planet Forward blog for an eco-friendly fashionista craft Friday. Fashion week in New York City has concluded and Donna Karan’s spring 2012 line was a hit with her tribal inspired collection which featured gorgeous layered leather necklaces. Did you know that you could easily craft a necklace inspired by Donna karan’s line yourself using items you may have around the house? Yes, you can be fashionable, crafty, and eco-friendly. So pull out those old leather or pleather skirts, pants, jackets, or even cuffs and repurpose them into something that will be the envy of any fashionista. This fashion forward craft came from Erica Domesek, creator and founder of website P.S. I made this… which inspires and encourages everyone to embrace Erica’s creative motto: “I see it. I like it. I make it.“ Stop by and have a look – it’s a fantastic site if you appreciate a (very creative and talented) DIY spirit. Now let’s make this necklace.

Eco-friendly fashion craft Donna Karan Tribal Necklace

What You Need:

  • Leather or pleather
  • A piece of cord
  • Sharp scissors
  • Glue gun

Directions:

  1. Cut strips of fabric, no pattern just free form strips of any length you like.
  2. On matt the side three-quarters of the way down put a dab of glue.
  3. Fold the top over so it is adheres to the glue. This creates a loop at the top of the piece of fabric.
  4. String on the cord.

When making this craft you can place as many pieces of leather on the necklace as you like so it can be very full or sparse. Tailor it to your own individual style. If you have two different colors or textures of leather or pleather mix and match to create visual interest. For a layered look (like DKNY) make two necklaces, one on a shorter cord than the other and wear them together. This will give you a look that is more reflective of Donna Karan’s actual spring collection.

The necklace is a great way to repurpose old clothing – you could probably even use a mismatched leather or faux leather glove. In the end this is an interesting, new look and a great piece of statement jewelry. Another piece in the Donna Karan collection was a bracelet that matched the necklace. These pieces were not worn together as it would be over the top. To make the bracelet use the same method but on a shorter cord and the piece of leather would also not be as long.

This is the ideal craft as it allows you to be runway ready on a budget while still being eco-friendly. If you make it, let us know in the comments how it worked out for you.
