The Super Bowl XLVI: A Super Renewable Opportunity. Did you know that the NFL purchases renewable energy credits in Super Bowl host cities to offset energy consumption? That’s right, they offset the massive energy use and support renewable energy.  In fact, the NFL has been going green for a while now but they neglect to brag about their green initiatives when they should be loud and proud.  The NFL’s top two teams are league leaders in renewable energy and energy efficiency. ”The Patriots and Giants are leading the way to victory on the gridiron and off the grid. In late 2011, both teams joined the ranks of the Eagles, Redskins, and Cardinals, among others, in pursuing clean ways to power their stadiums.  The Giants share their home field, MetLife Stadium (host of the future 2014 Super Bowl), with the New York Jets in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The stadium’s location was built with access to public transportation in mind and the stadium itself was constructed with an eye toward preserving the surrounding meadowlands. Even the seats are made from recycled materials!”  And the New England Patriots “launched their own renewable energy campaign, promising to install one megawatt of solar power between Gillette Stadium and the surrounding entertainment center, Patriot Place. The installation, which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 800 metric tons, will make the Patriots the league leader in renewable energy offsets.”  I’d say that’s a green touchdown.

Leonardo DiCaprio Launches Charity Coffee Brand.  That’s right, DiCaprio has aligned with coffee roaster La Colombe Torrefaction for a high-end sustainable coffee line called Lyon.  100% of the net profits from Lyon will benefit environmental charities through the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. “Raising awareness on the most pressing environmental issues of our time is more important than ever,” said Leonardo DiCaprio. “I am thrilled to be a part of this new project with La Colombe that will help aid the shift to a truly sustainable future for the planet and its inhabitants.” LYON will be sold in Williams Sonoma, select Whole Foods locations and La Colombe cafes.

Wind power blowing up in California. The LA Times reported that according to the California Wind Energy Association “wind energy now supplies about 5% of California’s total electricity needs, or enough to power more than 400,000 households.”  A lot of that was installed in the Tehachapi area of Kern County, with additional large projects in Solano, Contra Costa and Riverside counties as well.  “The total amount of wind energy installations in 2011 created a banner year for wind generation in California and is helping to drive California closer to reaching its goal of 33% renewable energy,” said Nancy Rader, executive director of the California Wind Energy Association.

And that’s it for this edition; stay tuned for more green news.

Welcome back eco-enthusiasts for another edition of green news of the week featuring a variety of green stories from around the blogosphere.  This weeks’ highlights: responsible celebrities, greener deliveries from Office Depot, Ford offers a zero emission solution, 10 Plants that clean the air in your home, the impact of cheese on the environment, and Vivienne Westwood launches her new eco-chic reusable bags.  If you see a headline that inspires curiosity, just click on it to read the full article.

Vote for the world’s most ‘Responsible Celebrity’
Voting is now open for the INTERNATIONAL GREEN AWARDS™ inaugural Best Green International Celebrity Award.  The nominees include 15 well respected celebrities who are ambassadors for the environment and sustainable development, aptly deemed ‘responsible celebrities’.  I think everyone knew Leonardo DiCaprio would be included but check out the star-studded list of nominees and see which of your favourite green celebrities made the cut.

Office Depot Replaces Cardboard Boxes With Reusable Totes
Office Depot is offering greener shipping by switching to reusable plastic totes instead of cardboard boxes combined with reusable paper bags.  The reusable bags are made from 40% post consumer recycled paper content and the reusable plastic tote that protects the bags during transportation contains 60% post consumer recycled plastic. Their new GreenerOffice™ Delivery Service demonstrates Office Depot’s commitment “to reducing the environmental impact of our deliveries while responding to our customers’ interest in saving resources and reducing waste.”

Ford, SunPower partner on rooftop solar for EV owners
Electric Vehicles (EV) may be even greener.  Ford and solar systems provider SunPower announced Wednesday that they would partner and provide drivers of Ford’s Focus Electric car with a rooftop solar system intended to offset the electricity required by the vehicle to run.  So not only will it never need a drop of gas, but with a rooftop solar system, the car would represent zero emissions.

10 Plants That Clean the Air Inside Your Home
“Although there are many different chemicals we would like to eliminate from our diet, the three most common ones found in our homes are benzene (a component of crude oil and solvents), formaldehyde (a colorless gas recently added to the Report on Carcinogens linking it to cancer) and trichloroethylenes (chlorinated hydrocarbons mostly used in industrial solvents). A study by Dr. Bill Wolverton, a former research scientist at NASA, resulted in a comprehensive list of the most effective plants to remove toxic chemicals from our air.”

Celebrity Green Achievers

Posted by: Planet Forward | Comments (0)

Hello and welcome back to the Planet Forward blog on this beautiful summer day here in Toronto. I recently came across an article in The Daily Green that highlighted the eco-achievements of 14 celebrities and what they have done to earn that moniker and thought we’d share a few of them here in case you missed it. We’re going to skip remarking on their looks and the like and just concentrate on how they walk the talk in their personal lives and spread green awareness.

Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo drives a hybrid car, had solar panels installed on his home and rather than taking private planes (which many celebrities opt for to preserve their privacy), he flies commercial. He also wrote, produced and narrated the eco-documentary The 11th Hour and started the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation which encourages eco-friendly initiatives.

Rachel McAdams

Fellow Canadian Rachel McAdams applies green sensibilities to every area of her everyday life including her consumption of consumer goods, supporting tree planting organizations, switching her house to green power and unplugging anything with a plug. She also launched a website with two friends called Green Is Sexy which provides green tips that can be applied to everyday life.

Ted Danson

Ted has quietly been green for the past 2 decades through his support of Oceana, a nonprofit which fights pollution in oceans. He took that a step further and began his own nonprofit – American Oceans Campaign which has since merged with Oceana.

Alicia Silverstone

Alicia is a staunch Vegan (she authored the cookbook The Kind Diet) and lives in an eco-friendly house complete with veggie garden. She even created her own line of natural cosmetics.

Green celebrity Woody Harrelson

Green celebrity Woody Harrelson

Woody Harrelson

Woody is a strict environmentalist and raw vegan and has been long before most knew to care. In 2009 he received an honorary degree from York University for his contributions to environmentalism and sustainability. He also ran the eco-friendly Website Voice Yourself for almost 10 years and once climbed the Golden Gate Bridge to protest a lumber company who was logging ancient redwood trees shutting down traffic for more than 6 hours.

Darryl Hannah

Hannah really does live a green life in her solar-powered home with graywater system and driving a call that runs on biodiesel. Even when she has to travel she makes sure she buys carbon offset credits. To get a better idea of serious Darryl takes being green and caring for the planet, check out her website dh love life.

Ed Begley Jr.

I think Ed is one of the more known green celebs who has been choosing eco-options going back to the 1970’s when he drove an electric car. Ed is also a longtime vegan who lives in a house powered by both wind and solar complete with a bicycle pedal-powered toaster. He is also associated with many environmental groups and hosts the Planet Green show Living With Ed.

Adrian Grenier

Adrian might be known for being self-indulgent Vinnie Chase on Entourage but in real-life his solar-panelled Brooklyn home uses insulation from recycled jeans and boasts many other green attributes. He also hosts the Planet Green production Alter Eco which shows viewers the changes they can make to go green. In the latest Entourage season premier, he even worked in a green reference when too many people driving too many cars showed up to pick him up. Hopefully we’ll see a greener Vinnie this season.

You can read the full The Daily Green list here and thanks for stopping by.
