An Eco-friendly Bride Would Not Say Yes to Excess
Posted by: | Comments
What happens to educated, successful and obviously employable women when they get engaged? It would seem the immediate hunt for the perfect dress begins. This is not just any dress – it must be a drop-dead-stunning-ball-gown that also falls within their budget which sometimes is very unreasonable. I like to think that most of us have an eco-friendly outlook and I would hope that many would be striving to decrease their carbon footprint. Why does there seem to be a disconnect when it comes to buying the perfect dress?
For this dress-buying task there is only one place in North America that seems to fit the bill – the wonderland of bridal couture, otherwise known as Kleinfeld Bridal. Kleinfeld is a name you may know from the TLC show Say Yes To The Dress. It is a place that treats every bride like a princess (insert eye roll). The hunt for the wow-dress that these brides seem to be on, once was a private affair but thanks to TLC, they’re proving exploitable as well. Remember, TLC are the same people that brought the plague of Jon and Kate Plus 8 to the world.
The show highlights the good, the sweet and the bridezilla. What is shocking is not just the price tags of these gowns, as many brides seem to smash their budget for the perfect dress, but the lengths they will go to, to get the dress. Apparently many believe that Kleinfeld is the only store that will have the dress they need in order to be able to get married so brides come from far and wide. Brides will trek by boat, plane, train or automobile to bring their one-wear-only dress back home. They come in clicks, sororities, families and sometimes even with their fiancés. One bride flew all the way from London to buy a dress and then left without a dress, as she was not able to afford it. Another bride drove ten hours to get to Manhattan from Salem North Carolina to get to Kleinfeld, with her whole bridal party in tow.

Falcon Heene "Balloon Boy"
Listen up, I have some breaking news, the Gosselin’s may not be worst parents on the face of the earth. I know this is shocking information but there is a new contender for the crown. With a mere ten-word utterance an innocent six year old turned a legitimate news story on its head. It might be obvious by now, but I am taking a little eco-break to talk about “Balloon Boy”, so indulge me.
First the facts, “Balloon Boy’s” real name is Falcon Heene and no he was not in the giant helium filled UFO/balloon his father built. When the “Balloon Boy” saga started it was suspected that the tiny six year old was trapped in the runaway homemade balloon that flew to reported heights of 5,000-8,000 feet. This held Americans captivated from the east to west coasts, as it played out on live TV. Everyone was concerned for the safety of the little boy, as they feared he might plummet to his death. When the balloon was found empty the story gained momentum, where was “Balloon Boy”? The media circus began.
The parents garnered much sympathy, until a Larry King interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer later that same day, when Falcon uttered “You guys said that we did this for a show”. Their hunger for additional media coverage was ultimately they’re downfall as that simple utterance was an Aha moment for everyone, including the Larimer County Sheriff’s Department. The fame-hungry family continued their media blitz while in damage control, as they appeared on every major news network/entertainment show from Today Show and Good Morning America to Inside Edition and Extra. Everyone was right to be skeptical of the balloon hoopla as the family, who has appeared on ABC’s Wife Swap twice and shopped a reality show to TLC (and other networks), did this as a stunt.
Before the truth came out, every news show / entertainment magazine show was all a twitter with the idea that the kids might be taken away. Why, you ask? There are various youtube videos of the kids fighting each other and performing raps with questionable language while walking along railroad tracks. Now, this seems to be a real possibility as child protective services has been notified and will be investigating their home life. Said news organizations (plus Access Hollywood) had body language experts scrutinize the infamous CNN clip and subsequent interviews, it would appear that the experts confirmed what we all suspected: Richard Heene got tense when his son misspoke on CNN. The father is shifty eyed in interviews, and Falcon may not have vomited due to illness, but rather it was the physical result of the pressure he was under.

Posted by: | Comments
Late night talk show host and comic, David Letterman has been put under siege of late but we want to focus on things that actually matter first. Letterman, in addition to being a great talent is also somewhat of an eco-friendly television pioneer having made a commitment to producing eco-friendly television programming through his production company World Wide Pants.
World Wide Pants, which produces The Late Show with David Letterman, partnered last year with EcoMedia. Rob Burnett, president and CEO of Worldwide Pants said that they “are extremely excited to partner with EcoMedia and look forward to creating [eco-friendly television]/entertainment that will hopefully not only be funny, but will also move viewers toward better, more sustainable practices in everyday life”. We commend Dave and World Wide Pants for their commitment to the planet. We hope more production companies follow their lead.
Now I suppose we have to address the hype. Unless you have been under a rock and that rock does not have wifi, you probably heard about the plot to extort two million dollars out of Letterman. David himself boldly broke the story, with his trademark wit and humor. Since then, the media have been circling everyone connected to World Wide Pants like vultures in the desert. Dave, ever-protective of is privacy has now overtaken fame-mongers Jon and Kate as the lead story on TV, newspapers, and the ever-important blogosphere. On top of that, the speculation and salacious insinuations have pulled news magazines like The Insider down to a new low. If you saw The Insider’s Michel Jackson coverage, you’ll know that is saying something.
