Top 10 Green Concept Computers
As solar powered solutions become more common, computer technology is also constantly evolving. Green computing technology encourages people to use computers and accessories that cause little to no harm to the environment during use or end of life. Green computers will further modernize in the years to come but this list has some nifty green concept computers and laptops that you should check out.
Solar stunner: U.S. exports almost $2 billion of solar products
Believe it or not, America is a huge net exporter of solar products at $2 billion. What’s staggering (and impressive) is that it represents a $1 billion increase over documented net exports from the solar sector last year making the US a significant contributor to the global market.
Ford And Zipcar Partner On Car-Sharing Program For Universities
Ford Motor Company and the largest car sharing network, Zipcar have announced a partnership that will add 650 Ford vehicles to service Zipcar’s University program over the next two years. This partnership will serve students at over 250 universities across the US. Zipcar, well-known for their car sharing service is ideal green transport for students requiring temporary auto transportation. Plus, thanks to Ford, Zipcar will begin offering $10 off its $35 annual membership fee for the first 100,000 new University program members who sign up for Zipcar as well as lower hourly rates. Currently, colleges represent over 10% of Zipcar’s business.
10 Celebrities Fighting To Save The Rainforests
From James Cameron to Prince Charles to Vivienne Westwood, many celebrities are using their clout to help save the rainforests which once occupied 14% of the planet and now it’s only 6%. One of the top advocates, Vampire Diaries’ Ian Somerhalder, who created the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, a non-profit organization which educates children on renewable energy, saving animals, and our extremely endangered Rainforests.
‘Bionic’ iPad 2 Case Made From Bottles
Seattle-based manufacturer Brenthaven have developed The Bionic iPad 2 Case, made from recycled plastic bottles. It has an eco-chic look while offering a durable and sustainable solution to protect your iPad 2. Considering we consume in outrageous quantities, I certainly hope creativity endures and we continue to find recycled uses for plastic bottles. Hopefully as a starting point to reduce consumption, people are buying less bottled water and using reusable bottles instead.
National Recycling Competition Kicks Off
It’s the back to school time of year again and we felt it was important to promote school recycling programs. What better than the Keep America Beautiful Recycle-Bowl competition. The concept easy to implement in any classroom – recycle as much as you can for one month and then report your results to Keep America Beautiful. It commences October 17, 2011 but eco-schools can start registering now for a chance to win some great prizes.
Until next week, happy green news reading!

So did you watch the 82nd Academy Awards last night? Did you notice (when you weren’t grinning at images of George Clooney or Keira Knightley) that a number of the nominated films had an eco-theme to them? You probably spotted at least one as it was nominated for almost everything (9 nominations in all) including best picture but there were four films in total that had a semblance of green or environmental messages contained within.
Hollywood gathers every March to honour the most creative and talented movie-makers in the industry but last night marked the first Oscars ceremony that so many films which asked their respective audiences to consider matters green were all nominated. In years past the closest we tended to get to films with a global message about sustainability were typically apocalyptic in nature but last nights nominations asked questions both large and small about the way in which we live. So before I get started can you think of the four films that went before the Academy for consideration?
I’ll start with the most obvious, that being James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar. The film that has now broken all global box office records didn’t win the biggest prizes on offer for Best Picture or Director but in terms of influence you have to acknowledge the audience worldwide. In just 12 weeks the film has grossed some $2.6 billion and remarkably more than 70% of that is from markets outside the US making the film a record breaker in all markets. Has the green message of the film been lost on those who were captivated by the special effects? Research suggests no and that it was impossible to disregard the message in relation to the future of our planet – Cameron suggests the film was to be ‘motivational and ‘a cautionary tale’.

The second film you may have seen, as it received just the one nomination (best documentary feature) and also won it. The Cove was more than a film, it serves as a call to activism which you can certainly support via their website. I won’t give away everything as it’s a film that should be explored on a personal basis but the synopsis is as accurate as can be:
Utilizing state-of-the-art techniques, including hidden microphones and cameras in fake rocks, the team uncovers how this small seaside village serves as a horrifying microcosm of massive ecological crimes happening worldwide. The result is a provocative mix of investigative journalism, eco-adventure and arresting imagery, adding up to an unforgettable story that has inspired audiences worldwide to action.

Our third green Oscar nominated film was a documentary that I reviewed on the blog back in November, and like ‘The Cove’ I heartily recommend that you take the time to rent or download a copy of ‘Food Inc’. It’s a film that at best will change the way you consume food or at worst will make you suggest others watch the film. We have to review the way we gather, raise and process our food. It really is as simple as that.
Finally something a little lighter but no less pertinent. I’ll even give you a clue that it was created from the book by the wonderful (and marginally subversive) Roald Dahl. Dahl had an uncanny knack of combining children’s stories with messages that reflected just how much the adults have taken us away from our goals as a society. If that seems a lofty goal for a kid’s film its because you’ve yet to see the ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ which manages to combine both. The film, nominated for best animated feature film and best original score features Mr Fox leading a campaign against a collection of evil farmers. You need to see it!

So if you are hoping to see the Oscar nominated films one wet weekend, why not start with these four?

Thanks for visiting Planet Forward and our eco-blog. We’re thrilled with the feedback and traffic from our visitors and hope you can share our site with others who might be like minded. A few times per week we bring you the green gazette where I dig out new green stories and inventions or ideas that we feel should be shared. If you ever find something that you think is newsworthy or simply a brilliant idea please do share with us via the site.
I read with interest about a British environmentalist who intends to drive around the world in a bus powered only by bio fuels (where possible of course) left the UK 4 months ago but things have taken a turn for the worse in India. Andy Pag who previously completed a London to Timbuktu drive using chocolate waste (how can there be such a thing?) has been driving his bus (The Bio Truck) around the globe using used cooking oil to heighten awareness about the potential of bio diesel. Andy has just been released from jail in India for bringing a satellite phone into the country without prior approval. He didn’t know he needed a license for the phone and was thus released on bail, however he cannot leave India until his scheduled trial on January 23rd. Keep up to date with Andy via his site and learn more. His twitter account has the latest news.

Blue meanie?
Next up, I’ve yet to see Avatar (I know…I’ll be the last) and I can’t say I’m very enamoured with James Cameron based on interviews I’ve seen. Nothing personal but he seems to be a somewhat…well….self important? That said I don’t know much about him especially when it comes to eco-issues but apparently he has made some statements last night that seem to very much at odds with both his lifestyle and business acumen if I can use that phrase. I won’t go right over the precipice with regards to Cameron as I can leave that in the very capable hands of the ‘Big Hollywood Blog’ who in this post seem to have made their mind up about the uber-director and his not so green resume. There are always two sides to every story but side one isn’t very promising is it? Maybe the characters in Avatar weren’t green for a reason?
Finally tonight it’s update time on the guide to Green Electronics with a great scoring system and notes to help consumers better evaluate the performances and green initiatives on major electronics manufacturers. Sony have been aggressively cross marketing their VAIO laptops and mini-notebooks with a greater emphasis on eco-friendly features. A new mercury free LED backlight has helped Sony leap in the standings but the review is interesting to read overall and can help you make a balanced decision if you are on the fence about an electronics purchase. The guide essentially grades 18 top manufacturers of personal computers, mobile phones, TVs and games consoles based on their green record. Some of what you read will be an eye opener in both good ways and bad…and I will name names on those not scoring well…Microsoft, Fujitsu and Dell. Get your collective act together because an informed public do care about what the corporate green initiatives are for their products these days. Send the review to your friends who love gadgets!
