In part 4 of our 5 part ‘best of 2011’ series this week, we look back at the weekly green news we highlighted from other green blog sites to establish our top 3 from Planet Forward blog readers.  To recap this week, our ‘best of 2011’ series has included our 3 most popular Meatless Monday vegetarian recipes; the 3 top corporate social responsibility initiatives; and our 3 most popular green posts.  Our weekly green news segment touches on several different articles covering various environmental issues, sourced from other reliable green blog websites.  When we took a look at the year in review, green news subjects included green chefs, coffee-powered cars, the Greenpeace Green electronics guide, organic food and recycled homes, to name a few.  Let’s see where these topics ranked:

EcoARK built from 1.5 million plastic bottles

In 1st place 10 Green Chefs, Coffee-powered cars, Health and Climate, Recycled Structures and Boeing.  A wide range of topics I know.  10 Green chefs included a list of chefs serving up wholesome food whether it be vegetarian, vegan and/or sustainable. We found the concept of a coffee-powered car intriguing, and it took us all the way to England, where coffee grounds were used to power a modified Rover SD1.  This edition also featured Health and Climate Change: 7 Ways You Are Being Harmed.  Then we explored 5 amazing structures made from recycled plastic bottles which included the astounding EcoARK (see photo), which is located in Taipei and is built out of 1.5 million recycled plastic bottles.   And finally, Boeing 787 declared its 787 Dreamliner will use 20 percent less fuel and produce 20 percent fewer emissions than similarly sized planes.

In 2nd place, the Greenpeace Green Electronics Guide, Home Depot Holiday Light Exchange and Buying Organic Foods weekly green news roundup.  Greenpeace released the seventeenth edition of the Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics which rated companies on a scale of 1 to 10 and placed them in either a green, yellow or red zone contingent on their performance. Electronics providers were evaluated based on policies and practices to reduce their impact on the climate, produce greener products and make their operations more sustainable.  This edition also included Home Depot’s Holiday light exchange program, which offered customers the opportunity to exchange their old holiday lights for a 30% discount off new, eco-friendly LED lights.  And last but not least, we incorporated a report from the Organic Trade Association which indicated that 78% of American families are now buying organic foods.

3rd place showcased recycled 747 Jets, recycled homes and recycled art which brought the concept of upcycling to a whole new level.  Architect David Hertz actually used recycled materials of a 747 jet from a California scrap dealer to make a beautiful home for organic gardening and green enthusiast, Francie Rehwald.  Then we covered The Daily Green’s list of ‘Amazing Homes and Offices Built from Shipping Containers’.  Shipping containers are commonly used for importing and exporting goods, but they can be recycled and upcycled into fantastic homes, offices or classrooms.  Make sure you check out the truly remarkable Container City™, which includes a series of eco-friendly, condo-like homes housed in upcycled shipping containers.  If you want something more private, you can’t go wrong with Ecopods, individual homes also constructed from steel shipping containers.  And finally, we discovered some pretty amazing upcycled art with 10 stunning animal sculptures made from recycled materials.

And that concludes part 4 of our ‘best of 2011’ green news weekly blogs.  Tune in tomorrow for our final instalment in our ‘best of 2011’ series which will include our top 3 eco-friendly crafts.

Welcome back for another edition of the green news weekly.  This week we go green shopping with the Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics; then, we decorate for the holiday season taking advantage of Home Depot’s Holiday LED light exchange; and finally, you’ll be surprised to learn what percentage of the US population is now buying organic foods based on a survey released by the Organic Trade Association.

Greenpeace has released the seventeenth edition of the Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics.  Companies were rated on a scale of 1 to 10 which places them in either a green, yellow or red zone contingent on their performance.  “HP, Dell, Nokia, Apple lead the way by innovative cradle-to-cradle design, use of less toxics as well as use of eco-friendly material in their products.” HP stole the top spot from Nokia because of their high score “when it came to measuring and reducing carbon emissions from its supply chain.”  Here’s the top 10 based on score (you can download the score card for each company):

1. HP 5.9/10
2. Dell 5.1/10
3. Nokia 4.9/10
4. Apple 4.6/10
5. Philips 4.5/10
6. Sony Ericsson 4.2/10
7. Samsung 4.1/10
8. Lenovo 3.8/10
9. Panasonic 3.6/10
10. Sony 3.6/10

It’s that time of year when everyone starts taking out and checking their lights in preparation for the holiday season; however, not everyone’s lights are eco-friendly. Home Depot Canada is doing something to help remedy that very problem through their Eco Options program. On Saturday November 12th to Sunday November 13th 2011 from 8AM – 3PM (where open) in all Canadian Home Depot Stores they will be hosting a light exchange. All customers have to do is bring in their old incandescent or old LED holiday light string and they will receive an in-store coupon for 30% off a new energy efficient set of LED holiday lights.   There will be a limit of five coupons per household and each coupon can be used for up to five new sets of lights. This should help an average household replace all their outdoor lights for the holiday season.

New LED light sets are 80% more energy efficient than the traditional incandescent version of holiday lights. Being more efficient means that a new set of LED lights will last up 25,000 hours or the equivalent of 12 holiday seasons. These new sets come with replacement bulbs and don’t heat up like the previous generation of lights, making them safer while saving money on energy.

Home Depot’s Eco Options program is designed to help customers identify products that are making an environmental difference, one purchase at a time. Home Depot also has Eco Options Consumer Events, which help customers “upgrade to more energy and water-efficient products, and providing public education on key environmental issues.” The company also hosts recycling programs, which help consumers responsibly recycle batteries, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), and “paint (in select provinces).” The light exchange program will certainly help make this holiday season a little brighter, while being greener.

The Organic Trade Association (OTA) has reported that seventy–eight percent of U.S. families say they purchase organic foods. “In a time when the severity of the economy means making tough choices, it is extremely encouraging to see consumers vote with their values by including quality organic products in their shopping carts,” said Christine Bushway, OTA’s Executive Director and CEO. “Nearly half – 48 percent – of parents surveyed revealed that their strongest motivator for buying organic is their belief that organic products “are healthier for me and my children.” Other motivators for purchasing organic included concern over the effects of pesticides, hormones and antibiotics on children, and the desire to avoid highly processed or artificial ingredients.”

Stay tuned for more green news.

Welcome back to the Green Gazette at Planet Forward. I hope your weekend is going well and you’re still following events at the Copenhagen Climate Summit as it enters its seventh day. As predictable as  it was annoying; a fringe element made sure that the demonstration today which attracted between 25-60,000 people (depending on which source you believe) resulted in arrests for the black flag brigade who somehow think smashing windows in Copenhagen will somehow lead to slower deforestation in Brazil. The result is that the gains made by 99% of the attendees will be offset by the boorish behaviour of a tiny minority. I’ve always maintained that they should be allowed their own separate demonstration in a rock quarry the day after the civil protests are complete. Violence only creates the chance for the the negatives to say that you’re dealing with radicals, which is a shame as I feel what is really radical is doing nothing and taking a wait and see approach. Needless to say when the conference is over I’ll do some research of the outcome and ideally share mostly good news with you!

marthaLike her or not you have to accept that Martha Stewart has an ability to greatly influence the shopping public. With that in mind it is worth announcing that Home Depot will have exclusive license (beginning in January 2010) to the new Martha Stewart Green line of household products. The eco-friendly product line, consists of 10 products for laundry, kitchen, bath and household cleaning, is being developed and marketing by the Hain Celestial Group, Inc. I’m confident it will be a success and to that end the reduction in traditional harmful cleaning products is a positive to be applauded. If you don’t want to tackle the snow to visit a Home Depot don’t forget we also offer the MIY Green Home Cleaning Kit which offers affordability and versatile applications. Read more about this on our site.

Holiday gift ideas are always useful and in this Ipod/Wii age I often wonder if parents are still remembering to purchase buy their children books to encourage reading? We have a Christmas budget rule in our house that at least a certain percentage of all gift budgets should be spent on books as we think every effort to help a child become an avid reader will only help them in later years. We also try and set aside a few hours each weekend when the kids are encouraged to relax with a book and just get lost in the stories. It’s promising to see that childrens books are developing a strong stable of green themed books to encourage children to become informed about environmental issues. Eco-issues are almost certainly going to be amongst the largest of global concerns for our current generation of children as they grow up and I think nurturing an inherent interest many kids display about animals and nature is a natural progression. This article in the L.A. Times reviews some of the best titles that you might want to consider putting under the tree along with the video games and hot wheels cars.

Also from the L.A. times this story reveals how green jobs are bucking the trend in a difficult labour market and are in growth as predicted. greencollarjobs120508Throughout the US election last year there was much talk about how making the economy more green would create jobs and some stimulus within the economy and employment market. Twelve months later it is encouraging to read that the theory is becoming an actuality in California. As you read the article you’ll see that the trend hardly outweighs the overall difficult job market but if you are in a position to retrain or at the beginning of your higher education it provides some strong evidence that making a step toward a growth industry such as alternate energy or home/business retrofitting would be a wise move.
