Welcome back to Planet Forward blog, today we’ll be making an eco-friendly craft for kids in celebration of Valentine’s Day that doubles as a decoration. Our eco-friendly craft today is a Valentine’s Day paper towel wreath. Though the craft may seem daunting at first, it is super easy and something you will treasure for years to come. The Valentine’s Day paper towel wreath is great to hang on your front door or the door of a classroom. This fun and earth friendly project comes by way of thethriftress.com. Let’s get crafting.

• Hot glue gun
• Ribbon

1. Save up two paper towel rolls.
2. Flatten out the tube and then invert one side so you have a heart like shape.
3. Cut the tube into roughly equal parts.
4. Round out the sharp points so you have nice heart shaped pieces.
5. Spray the cut out heart pieces with spray paint of choice.  While the paint is still wet liberally apply glitter.
6. Use hot glue to piece together wreath.
7. Adjust as you glue so that you have a round wreath shape when finished.
8. The finished wreath is on the small side so [you can] decide to add another row of hearts.
9. Tie a large piece of ribbon through the wreath and hang on your door

Though this eco-friendly craft calls for the use of spray paint, it’s not necessary. You can easily paint the paper towel roll heart using whatever paint you have in the house. In fact, decorating is the perfect way to get children involved in their craft. Also, the wreath does not have to simply be red, as it would look great if done in shades of pink, red, and white. If you want to be really creative (or if you have various shades of leftover paint), paint the inside and outside of each heart a different colour. The sky is the limit when you are crafting and the only thing holding you back is your imagination.

Remember that children should always be supervised when crafting. It is probably a good idea if an adult cuts out the heart shapes, as the cardboard is difficult to cut through. The Valentine’s Day paper towel wreath is a wonderful way to spend a snowy winter day. Not to mention that eco-friendly crafts for kids allow you to spend creative time with your family while making memories that will last a lifetime. Also, this is perfect craft to stow away and reuse for years to come. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Sometimes the simplest of meals are the hardest to prepare, because they make the most of just a few key ingredients. We have taken the pledge to abstain from eating meat once a week as part of the Meatless Monday movement. Making a meatless dish should be easy and convenient that’s why we’ve found this recipe for you to make for dinner tonight. Spaghetti pecorino romano and black pepper (cacio e pepe) is a simple and delicious rustic Italian meal that you can serve to perfection with these easy steps. This is one meal that you can whip up easily as everything you need you can kept on hand. The recipe for cacio e pepe comes by way of the PBS hit series America’s Test Kitchen (watch the video) . Let’s get cooking.

Spaghetti with Pecorino Romano and Black Pepper (Image Credit: americastestkitchen.com)

INGREDIENTS:

• 6 ounces Pecorino Romano cheese , 4 ounces finely grated (about 2 cups) and 2 ounces coarsely grated (about 1 cup)
• 1 pound spaghetti
• Table salt
• 2 tablespoons heavy cream (see note)
• 2teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 ½ teaspoons finely ground black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Place finely grated Pecorino in medium bowl. Set colander in large bowl.
2. Bring 2 quarts water to boil in large Dutch oven. Add pasta and 1½ teaspoons salt; cook, stirring frequently, until al dente. Drain pasta into colander set in bowl, reserving cooking water. Pour 1½ cups cooking water into liquid measuring cup and discard remainder; return pasta to now-empty bowl.
3. Slowly whisk 1 cup reserved pasta cooking water into finely grated Pecorino until smooth. Whisk in cream, oil, and black pepper. Gradually pour cheese mixture over pasta, tossing to coat. Let pasta rest 1 to 2 minutes, tossing frequently, adjusting consistency with remaining ½ cup reserved pasta water. Serve, passing coarsely grated Pecorino separately.

The recipe for cacio e pepe will yield four to six servings and can easily be adjusted to feed a crowd. As this dish only has so few ingredients you should try to buy the best and freshest ingredients you have available. “Imported Pecorino Romano is a hard, aged sheep’s milk cheese with a distinctively pungent, salty flavor that bear’s almost no resemblance to domestic cheeses simply labeled “Romano.” (These wan stand-ins are made with cow’s milk and lack the punch of the real deal).” The difference in the cheese is noticeable, but you can use whatever you prefer. It may sound odd that the recipe dictates the amount of water you use to boil the pasta, however the cooks at America’s Test Kitchen perfect each dish they make and they look into the science behind each recipe. During of 90-100 test of this recipe they found that if you used too much water, it caused the cheese to clump when the dish was put together. When grating your cheese it is best to use the small holes on the box grater when you need fine grate and large holes for a coarse grate. A food processor works well for a fine grate as well; however, specialty cheese shops will finely grate their fresh product for you. If you are able to have your cheese grated for you, ask them to keep the rind. You can use the rind to help flavor tomato sauce or even some soups. If you want to cut the calories in the dish, use half-and-half in lieu of heavy cream.

If you want to add fiber to any pasta dish substitute traditional pasta for a whole wheat variety, know that the box must be labeled 100% whole wheat if you want to obtain any health benefits from your pasta. This simple rustic Italian meal is perfect to serve if you have unexpected company as it has an understated elegance and sophistication any foodie would appreciate. Complete this offering with a large balsamic dressed green salad and a glass of good organic wine. The best part about this dish is that you know every ingredient in it and it celebrates Meatless Monday. Buon appetito!

Welcome back to the Planet Forward blog, today we are getting ready for Valentine’s Day with a fun eco-friendly craft for kids and adults. We’ll be making a Valentine’s Day heart garland, which is inspired by the paper chain garlands that we made for Christmas. This craft is the perfect way to decorate your home, a classroom or even a Valentine’s Day party. The Valentine’s Day heart garland is an inexpensive way to celebrate the holiday. Our craft today comes courtesy of Martha Stewart Living Television. Let’s get crafting.

Tools and Materials:
• Heart garland template
• Card stock or construction paper
• Scissors
• Stapler
• Glue stick

Directions:
1. Create a heart-shaped template, or print out the heart garland template, and place it on a stack of 4 sheets of card stock. Staple the center of the hearts and cut out the shapes.
2. Make a 1-inch vertical cut at the pointed end of a heart; cut heart to about 1 inch wide all the way around the inside. Make two 1/2-inch horizontal cuts from the center of the point of the heart. Repeat with other hearts.
3. Link two hearts through the cuts at the points; glue and trim the cut ends to create a point. Continue the process until all the hearts linked.

When making this eco-friendly craft for kids you could have children cut out hearts inspired by the pattern for a more homemade look. For a classroom it would be cute if every child made one heart for the garland and decorated it, this would add color and personality to this sustainable craft.  If you have a certain area where you want to place the garland, like on a long wall or in a doorway, measure the space first so you have an idea of how long the garland needs to be.

This is the perfect eco-friendly craft for kids to make well before Valentine’s Day when the weather is inclement. Another reason this heart garland craft is eco-friendly, aside from the fact that you are repurposing items in your home, is that you can store it and reuse it the next year. If you fold the garland carefully and place it in a bag you can then stow it away with your other holiday decorations. Remember that children should never be left unsupervised when crafting. For younger children you may want to pre-cut the hearts and just have them decorate them, as scissors may not be safe for them to use. This is a fun, and sustainable way to decorate for Valentine’s Day. Have fun and happy crafting.
