The Super Bowl XLVI: A Super Renewable Opportunity. Did you know that the NFL purchases renewable energy credits in Super Bowl host cities to offset energy consumption? That’s right, they offset the massive energy use and support renewable energy.  In fact, the NFL has been going green for a while now but they neglect to brag about their green initiatives when they should be loud and proud.  The NFL’s top two teams are league leaders in renewable energy and energy efficiency. ”The Patriots and Giants are leading the way to victory on the gridiron and off the grid. In late 2011, both teams joined the ranks of the Eagles, Redskins, and Cardinals, among others, in pursuing clean ways to power their stadiums.  The Giants share their home field, MetLife Stadium (host of the future 2014 Super Bowl), with the New York Jets in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The stadium’s location was built with access to public transportation in mind and the stadium itself was constructed with an eye toward preserving the surrounding meadowlands. Even the seats are made from recycled materials!”  And the New England Patriots “launched their own renewable energy campaign, promising to install one megawatt of solar power between Gillette Stadium and the surrounding entertainment center, Patriot Place. The installation, which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 800 metric tons, will make the Patriots the league leader in renewable energy offsets.”  I’d say that’s a green touchdown.

Leonardo DiCaprio Launches Charity Coffee Brand.  That’s right, DiCaprio has aligned with coffee roaster La Colombe Torrefaction for a high-end sustainable coffee line called Lyon.  100% of the net profits from Lyon will benefit environmental charities through the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. “Raising awareness on the most pressing environmental issues of our time is more important than ever,” said Leonardo DiCaprio. “I am thrilled to be a part of this new project with La Colombe that will help aid the shift to a truly sustainable future for the planet and its inhabitants.” LYON will be sold in Williams Sonoma, select Whole Foods locations and La Colombe cafes.

Wind power blowing up in California. The LA Times reported that according to the California Wind Energy Association “wind energy now supplies about 5% of California’s total electricity needs, or enough to power more than 400,000 households.”  A lot of that was installed in the Tehachapi area of Kern County, with additional large projects in Solano, Contra Costa and Riverside counties as well.  “The total amount of wind energy installations in 2011 created a banner year for wind generation in California and is helping to drive California closer to reaching its goal of 33% renewable energy,” said Nancy Rader, executive director of the California Wind Energy Association.

And that’s it for this edition; stay tuned for more green news.

Anne Hathaway Public School green students recently participated in the Waste-Free Lunch Challenge and the results were impressive. Anne Hathaway Public School is located in Stratford, Ontario (that’s right, Justin Bieber’s hometown), with students from kindergarten to grade 6.  “The Waste-Free Lunch Challenge is an elementary school program developed by the Recycling Council of Ontario in partnership with Metro Ontario Inc. and Tetra Pak Canada. The goal of the program is to help schools decrease the amount of garbage they produce and to educate students, staff and parents about waste reduction.” Twenty participating schools will win $1,000 and Anne Hathaway is in contention (good luck!).

According to the Recycling Council of Ontario, “School lunches are a major source of waste in Ontario with the average student’s lunch generating a total of 30 kilograms of waste per school year, or an average of 8500 kilograms (18,700 lbs) of waste per school per year.”

During the week prior to the challenge, Anne Hathaway Public School conducted a pre-audit of their waste which equated to 15.42 kilograms of garbage.  Then during Waste Reduction Week from October 17 to October 22, 2011, Anne Hathaway’s green students brought waste-free lunches to school which resulted in a waste reduction to 8.27 kilograms.  That’s a 46 percent decrease in waste and 7.15 kilograms of garbage that didn’t end up in a landfill.

The Stratford Gazette spoke to Tarra Green, the teacher that spearheaded and organized this green initiative at the school who said:  “It’s important for the kids to take care of the Earth; they are in charge of their future.”  It’s commendable that teachers like Tarra Green are inspiring and encouraging students to make greener choices for a sustainable future.

Packing a waste-free lunch is simple and can be accomplished through these 5 easy steps:

 1. Pack food in reusable lunch containers

 2. Wash and reuse real silverware and cloth napkins.  Say no to plastic cutlery and disposable napkins!

 3. Store juice, milk, water or other beverages in a reusable and sustainable BPA-free bottle

 4. Control food portions to ensure that there are no ‘leftovers’ to dispose of; compost any scraps

 5. Pack it all in a reusable lunch bag or tote

Waste Reduction Week is already set for next year – October 15 to 21, 2012.  Let’s hope all elementary schools follow the lead of Anne Hathaway Public School and participate in the Waste-Free Lunch Challenge in 2012.  If one school in one week can almost cut their waste in half, imagine what communities of schools across Ontario can accomplish.

This new feature of the Sustainable Scribe will look at the variety of Green Initiatives of various MLB teams.  Next up, the New York Yankees.

As a Torontonian I am supposed to root for my home team, the Toronto Blue Jays and although I try my heart is in the Bronx.  The Pride in the Pinstripes all the way, baby.  I could write forever about this storied franchise but I’ll try to stay focused and impartial and just assess them on where they rank as an eco friendly ball club.   Did I mention that I love them? Should I mention they lead the league in being eco-friendly too?

Professional sports franchises are often derided by cynics as being driven by greed and embroiled in controversy. I think that they can be cornerstones in bringing together communities and in terms of green initiatives can lead by example.
