10 Easy Ways to Conserve Water

Posted by: Tracy | Comments (0)

Water is a precious resource that we need to conserve.  Unfortunately, we are a wasteful society and the waste goes way beyond trash sent to landfills.  Yes, you should recycle and compost, but what about water consumption?  There are many times when you run that tap excessively and unnecessarily.  I’ve been guilty of it myself.  But I’ve found that conserving water is one of the easy lifestyle changes to make in my effort to go green.  I wanted to share some of the simple and common ways that you can help save water armed only with a water-conscious approach.

waterHere are 10 simple ways to help conserve water:

  1. Turn off the water when you’re brushing your teeth and you can save 25 gallons of water per month.
  2. Soak those pots and pans in soapy water instead of letting the water run while you scrub to clean them.
  3. Make sure you do all your planting in the fall when the weather conditions are cooler and rainfall is more abundant.
  4. Like a cold drink of water?  Keep a pitcher of water in the fridge instead of running the tap and avoid wasting water down the drain.  Going out?  Fill up a reusable stainless steel water bottle at home instead of buying a one-time use plastic bottle.  It takes 3 times as much water to produce 1 plastic bottle of water.
  5. If you turn off the water when shaving and you can save up to 300 gallons a month.
  6. You should always water your lawn and garden in the morning or evening because temperatures are cooler and this will help diminish evaporation.
  7. Fresh Fruits and vegetables should be washed in a pan or bowl filled with water instead of rinsing them while running water from the tap.
  8. Adjust your lawn mower. A taller lawn is plush and shades your roots while absorbing and maintaining soil moisture better than if it is closely trimmed.

red-hot-and-green-with-carter-oosterhouseDo you remember the uber cute carpenter Carter Oosterhouse from the TLC show Trading Spaces? Well, Carter is back in a big way and with an eco-friendly television show:  Red, Hot & Green.  On the Rachel Ray Show, Carter performed an eco-friendly makeover of actor John Stamos’ Broadway Dressing room.  John Stamos, best known for his roles on Full House and ER, is currently starring in the Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie.  Carter was given a mere 48 hours to give makeover to this barren dressing room. John asked for a late 1960’s Hollywood glam vibe for his home away from home. Carter achieved this look by using a dark grey wallpaper, as he feels that wallpaper adds an artistic element to a room. He then added lighter colored squares of wallpaper on the focal wall to brighten up the space. The remodel included building shelves etc… out of MDF (medium density fiberboard).

Now in the past MDF was not an eco-friendly product but Oosterhouse used a new green MDF which boosts a non-toxic adhesive to join all the fibers together. The dressing rooms’ grand reveal was everything Stamos had asked for and more.  It was masculine but with a definite sense of style and an eco-friendly slant.  Oosterhouse used a color palette black, white, and grey with red as an accent color. “Spectacular” said Stamos of his renovated dressing room. John’s favorite element was that he has a space he can relax in, which will still accommodate guests.

Green Tip Of The Week – Shop Vintage

Posted by: Tracy | Comments (4)

vintage-clothesNow you can follow a green tip and look stylish as you shop for vintage clothing.  The concept of vintage clothes is simple:  recycle and reuse as opposed to throwing things away.  Americans alone discard two quadrillion pounds of used clothing every year.  That’s right, I said two quadrillion.  That’s actually a 2 with 15 zero’s behind it!  How do you even begin to combat a number so stifling?  Well, it starts with you and your purchasing decisions.

When you buy vintage it’s not manufactured for you ‘new’ so it eliminates the environmental impact of production and the carbon emissions to ship it to a store near you.  Even vintage accessories are available like jewelry, shoes and handbags which are both fashionable and sustainable.  Vintage items are also considered a collectible that often have high resale value.  Many of today’s fashion designers gain inspiration from vintage outfits.

Vintage was considered hip long before celebrities started wearing it.  But let’s give credit to superstars like Natalie Portman, Gwen Stefani, Charlize Theron, Chloe Sevigny, Nicole Kidman, Katy Perry, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Angelina Jolie for dressing in vintage clothing which increases visibility and popularity.
