Green fashion alert: famed shoe designer Manolo Blahnik is coming out with an eco-friendly line for Spring 2012. Blahnik became a household name thanks to Sex and the City fashionista Carrie Bradshaw and her portrayer Sarah Jessica Parker. The rewound shoe designer is teaming up with Marcia Patmos, the former designer for Lutz & Patmos who now runs her own earth-friendly line, M. Patmos. The two will collaborate on a capsule collection of sustainable shoes according to Women’s Wear Daily.

The collection will be available for sale this spring. What makes the line eco-friendly is that is will be made entirely from discarded tilapia skins, raffia and cork.

This collection is Blahnik’s first foray into environmentally friendly luxury apparel. He and Patmos have created two styles for their mini collection one is a “double strap, open-toe flat and [the other is a] strappy, high-heeled sandal in color combinations of electric blue, black, nude and yellow.” Both styles will be available at Blahnik’s retail stores for $895.

Patmos said to Women’s Wear Daily “I am always researching sustainable materials and developments. I love the idea of tilapia skin because it is a by-product of the food industry that would otherwise be discarded, but it’s actually a beautiful material perfect for small leather goods.”

Creating an eco-friendly and sustainable product line, even if it is only a capsule collection, demonstrates the direction that luxury brands are heading in. Consumers are becoming more concerned with sustainability and are using the power of their pocketbooks to get the products they desire. That is why this line is so important, it is indicative of the larger trends happening in retail today.

Blahnik’s shoes are most definitely a luxury item; however, you can feel better about the shoe splurge if the product is made from sustainable materials. Recently, Blahnik’s line has been eclipsed by the famous red soled Christian Louboutin shoes, perhaps this forward thinking line will be what puts him back on top. So, now you can be an eco-chic fashionista come spring 2012.

Disposable diapers pose a very real concern to eco-conscious parents who want to help minimize waste that’s clogging our landfills. It’s not always easy to make sustainable lifestyle choices as parents are often too busy juggling children, work, and home life to commit to using reusable cloth diapers. That’s where the Canadian company Happy Nappy Diaper Service comes in to make it convenient for you to choose reusable cloth diapers.

The premise of the Happy Nappy Diaper Service is simple; they manufacture cloth diapers, and then drop off a fresh supply to consumer’s houses each week. They also pick up last weeks soiled diapers upon delivery. The diapers are brought back to their warehouse and cleaned for reuse.  Their diapers are made from high performance fabrics. In fact, they are microfiber diapers that have latex free elastic in them. This means that they are safe for babies, as latex is a rapidly growing allergy. This product will help keep a child cool, dry, comfortable, while wearing a breathable and dependable diaper.

For those worried about the laundering process, they are certified phosphate free and do not use LAS based detergents. They don’t use chlorine to whiten or sanitize the diapers. In fact, they “balance the pH levels in the wash to match the pH level of your baby’s skin, which further reduces the incidence of diaper rashes. [Also, they use] cold water detergents because they use less energy than hot water detergents do, making it that much better for the environment.” This means that the laundering process is both safe for baby and the environment, something that is not always easy to achieve.

The choice to switch to cloth is a personal one; however, it should be taken into consideration that the average disposable diaper will stay in a landfill for approximately 500 years.  Over 4 million diapers are disposed of per day in Canada.  And, “an estimated 27.4 billion disposable diapers are used each year in the US, resulting in a possible 3.4 million tons of used diapers adding to landfills each year.”  It’s these statistics that encourage parents to look for sustainable product alternatives.

The Happy Nappy Diaper Service was featured on the CBC’s hit investment series Dragon’s Den. The dragon’s didn’t invest in the company even thought they felt it was a sound business model, because they felt investors were not needed. Arlene Dickinson, a marketing expert, believed that this kind of diaper delivery service will grow in popularity and has the potential hold twenty-percent of the diaper market share. The company has both corporate and franchise locations available in communities in Ontario, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.

Many consumers are looking for environmentally friendly alternatives to everyday problems. It’s with these small changes that people are able to live more sustainable lifestyles and help reduce waste congesting landfills. Kudos to Happy Nappy for giving a viable and convenient option for those wanting to use a cloth diaper instead of the traditional disposable version.

Recycled Computer Keyboard Wall Tiles Image Credit: © Sarah Frost

Season’s greetings and welcome back for another edition of our weekly green news highlights. This week: Ian Somerhalder’s passionate plea to Congress to protect endangered species and prevent extinction; Ford announces the Focus Electric 2012, the first five-passenger, all electric vehicle (EV); and recycled art decorates walls with old keyboards.

Ford announced yesterday that “their world-class Michigan Assembly Plant is starting production of the 2012 Focus Electric, expected to be the first five-passenger, all-electric car to achieve more than a 100 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) fuel efficiency rating.”  With the Focus Electric battery recharging in a little over 3 hours using a 240 volt charging station, cutting in half the charging time of the 2012 Nissan Leaf.   “Focus Electric is designed to offer enough range to cover the majority of daily driving habits of Americans. It’s expected 100 MPGe is better than Chevrolet Volt and all electric vehicles with seating for five. Faster charging with 240 volts also can extend range as drivers can more quickly recharge between stops – up to 30 miles per charge hour – so they can more than double the vehicle’s range with multiple charging stops during a busy day of driving.”

Another benefit is Ford’s environmentally-friendly Michigan Assembly Plant. “Renewable energy collected by the solar panels directly feeds the energy-efficient microgrid, helping power the plant. When the plant is inactive, such as holidays, the stored solar energy will provide power during periods of insufficient or inconsistent sunlight.”  The plant is also equipped with “10 electric vehicle charging stations that recharge the electric switcher trucks that transport parts between adjacent facilities – saving an estimated 86,000 gallons of gas a year.”

In 2011, the Western Black Rhino, a prized African species, became extinct.  Vampire Diaries Actor and animal rights activist Ian Somerhalder wrote an article for the Huffington Post which included his own plea to congress to reauthorize the Multinational Species Conservation Funds. He asked the disturbing question: “who will join the extinction list in 2012?” Apparently elephants, tigers, rhinos, great apes, and marine turtles are all at risk of joining the extinction list.

Somerhalder explains “The House of Representatives is currently stalling on a bill that would reauthorize funds to protect all of the aforementioned animals, a bill that has received strong bi-partisan support for over 14 years. This should be an easy choice.“  Agreed, wildlife conservation should be a priority especially when we are talking about saving millions of animals.  He goes on to say “And, for every dollar spent by the U.S. government for these conservation funds between 2006 and 2010, the program raised two dollars in matching funds from private or international donors, making this a very sound investment of taxpayer dollars. Even eliminating the program altogether would only save $19 million over the next ten years: a mere drop in the bucket compared to our national debt of $15 trillion.”  An excellent point, $19 million is a tiny crumb in the $15 trillion US national debt pie.  Please click here to pledge your support and send a letter to Congress.

Sarah Frost has created something really unique by recycling and upcycling computer keyboards into entire walls tiled with old keyboard keys.  Frost states, “My work examines our culture through the collection of its remains, such as discarded consumer objects. Rather than making representations to create an art object, I accumulate cast-off objects that already exist. I choose them for their history, evidence of use and what they imply about their users. I then re-present these items in a different form and context for a particular site. I find the traces of the personal left on these objects – evidence of habits, experience, emotion and personal taste – poignant in the absence of their owners and any further use.”  What an amazing sentiment behind her inspiration for upcycling genius.  I look forward to seeing more of Sarah Frost’s work.

Will you be considering a Focus Electric Vehicle in 2012?  How about joining Ian Somerhalder’s plight to protect endangered species?  Stay tuned for more green news.
