Eco Company showcases the latest in eco technology and educates about what is going on in the world. They achieve this in an accessible way by having a dynamic and diverse group of teens that are passionate about the issues they are discussing. The show highlights and does individual profiles on teens and young adults who are involved in green issues and are making a difference. They explore issues from internships with green employers to those doing green community service. Eco Company is also a platform to shine a light on organizations, schools, companies, and community groups that are making a positive impact on the environment.

Eco Company airs in markets all across the country (USA). Find out which local station airs the show in your area and tune in! Each week Eco Company explores all aspects of being green and understanding how we impact our world. The E-Co Team reports on the latest developments in renewable energies and alternative fuels. In the end, the show is all about promoting people who are actively trying to make a difference to the environment around them. This type of programming helps to inspire other children and teens to get involved and perhaps implement some of these community projects in their area or open them up to thinking about entirely different career paths. No matter what the impact, Eco Company is proving that teens and young adults can and are making an impact on the world around them. Plus, they give viable tips for how to make everyday life a little greener and sustainable in simple ways. It is important that these issues get screen time and as it is a way to convey new ideas and information to those who might not be up-to-date on them. Kudos to Eco Company for making these important environmental issues accessible to a new generation.

David Letterman has been known for making eco-friendly television, and we have blogged about it before, if you remember the in-depth look into his interview with former United States Vice President Al Gore. Knowing that The Late Show host has an interest in the environment, it is not surprising that one of his bits was about green tips.

david-lettermanThis foray into eco-friendly television was started when Letterman said that “everyone is concerned with the planet blowing up and we want to preserve life on this planet”. He then launched into The Late Show’s green tips, so here are possibly some of the funniest and worst tips ever:

  1. People leave grass clipping on their lawn as natural fertilizer. In Las Vegas they are paying people to pull out their lawns and replace it with a natural desert landscape because they don’t have enough water for people to water their lawns.
  2. Replace paper napkins with reusable cloth napkins.
  3. Buy food from local sources when possible.
  4. Breath fewer times per minute.
  5. Turn off the lights when you enter a room.
  6. Cut the electricity you use by purchasing a toaster powered by a wind turbine.
  7. Instead of a hot pockets switch to lukewarm pockets.
  8. Save $50.00 a year on your phone bill by speaking in a lower tone.
  9. Instead of using a fuel wasting lawn mower encourage your kids to graze.
  10. Reduce your carbon footprint by flying on the backs of large birds.
  11. Use cloth diapers rather than disposable diapers on your pet monkey.
  12. Instead of using bottled water carry a wet sponge.

top-chefAs part of our continuing series reviewing eco-friendly television and film, The Green Screen takes a look at Bravo’s popular reality TV show Top Chef.  Yes, even reality TV can be eco-friendly and I wanted to give a shout out to one of my personal favorites.

Top Chef features host and head judge Tom Colicchio as an intimidating yet charismatic mentor.  Along with co-host Padma Lakshmi and my other favorite judge, Gail Simmons, Top Chef fascinates you with culinary skill and lures you in with food you can only look at and not taste.  The show’s format involves chefs from around the world competing to become Top Chef with an contestant eliminated each episode if their food doesn’t make the grade.  And even though you can’t taste the food, it’s clear from Judges feedback that these Chefs are talented.

So how are they eco-friendly?  Well, Top Chef contestants often cook with sustainable foods and always shop with reusable bags.  Viewers of the show know the format – they cook in a mini-challenge and then head to the elimination challenge where they are given a budget to shop for ingredients.  Every time they shop for food, they fill up their groceries in reusable bags.  After their food has been prepared, tasted and evaluated, the Chefs head to judges table to determine who will be eliminated.  Unlike most reality TV, Top Chef is not a popularity contest, they are assessed based on cooking skills only, not personality.  If you haven’t seen it, you really should tune in – it’s reality TV at its finest.

Top Chef takes it a step further since contestants often cook with sustainable foods from a sustainable farm.  Read More→
