It’s the New Year and everyone is on a wellness kick and that includes being organized. Here is a fun and easy eco-friendly craft for kids that will help keep your children’s art supplies tidy. Today, we are making a juice carton desk organizer from inhabitots.com. This is a great craft you can do with the kids on a cold, snowy winter day and it provides a dual incentive to help the kids stay more organized.  Now let’s get crafting.

Supplies:

• empty juice carton (substitute with milk cartons)

• craft knife (X-Acto knife)

• recycled twine

• hole punch

• your child’s art supplies

Directions:

1. Thoroughly wash and dry the inside and outside of the orange juice container. Use your craft knife to cut a large flap on the front of the carton. Then, repeat on the opposite side. Fold the edge of the flaps so they easily open and close.

2. Use your hole punch to punch several holes down the middle of the carton (in between the flaps). You can make as many rows and holes to accommodate the number of colored pencils that you have.

3. Punch a hole in the center of each of the flaps that you created in step 1. Tie a small twine loop for opening and closing the flaps.

4. At the top of the organizer (opposite the spout), cut a large hole to hold a glue stick. You could also put crayons in the hole or another small art supply.

5. Have your child add the colored pencils to the holes in the center of the organizer. We pointed our pencils down to prevent anyone from accidentally getting poked with the pencils.

6. Fill the two side compartments with an assortment of art supplies. We stacked large chunky crayons in one side and lined up large and small markers on the other side.

You can view a step by step image gallery for this eco-friendly craft at inhabitots.com.

One of the best aspects of this art supply desk organizer is that you can make it with everything you have in the house. If you have enough art supplies you could even make one for each child. Another fun step to get the kids involved with this eco-friendly craft is letting them decorate it before you put anything in it. Just think how lovely it would look painted their favorite colour, covered in stickers, or a collage of favorite things that they cut out of magazines. If you do not have an orange juice carton you could substitute it with a milk carton of the same size.

Perhaps after completing this eco-friendly craft, your kids will have renewed interest in keeping organized. Remember that when making any craft, children should always be supervised. So try this creative, green craft and help make your New Year a little bit more organized.

Welcome back to the Planet Forward blog for an eco-friendly craft for kids Friday with a twist. Rather than a craft, we’re bringing a simple recipe today that kids can make with a little adult supervision.

Santa gets cookies on Christmas Eve with each home visit but what about his reindeer? Everyone forgets about them. Until today. Today we have a simple recipe for Reindeer Treats that the kids can make and put out for Santa’s reindeer. This great recipe comes courtesy of Bakerella which is an incredible site for all things baking. Not only is it beautifully designed but the recipes are amazing and the photography is excellent. If you haven’t had the pleasure and are interested in baking, do yourself a favour and visit this fantastic site. Now on to our Reindeer Chow.

Ingredients

  • 5 cups Crispix Cereal
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 12 oz. package of semi-sweet chocolate morsels
  • 1 box confectioner’s sugar

Directions

  1. Melt chocolate in microwave 1 minute at a time until melted.
  2. Add peanut butter to melted chocolate and mix well.
  3. In a large bowl (with a snap on lid), add melted chocolate and peanut butter to top of cereal and mix well.
  4. Add confectioner’s sugar and cover bowl with lid. Shake well to coat thoroughly.

Note: If you don’t have a bowl with a lid, you can place the coated cereal and confectioner’s sugar in a large ziploc bag and shake well.

These Reindeer Treats are simple, delicious and are sure to be a hit with adults, kids and, well, reindeer too. Simply fill up a bowl and leave them beside the cookies for Santa and you’ll see a clean bowl in the morning.

We’ll return with more eco-friendly crafts for kids next Friday but we couldn’t resist this fun and easy recipe that is perfect for the holiday season (and can also work at any time of year too). Our thanks again to the Bakerella.

Happy Holidays!

Welcome back to the Planet Forward blog for another holiday-inspired eco-friendly craft for kids on this chilly Friday. Everyone has made or seen a paper chain either hanging in a doorway, across a wall or as a garland on a Christmas tree. These chains are usually made out of construction paper but today’s eco-friendly craft makes use of wrapping paper remnants from the end of rolls or oddly cut scraps left from gifts. Keep in mind that the patterned paper will make gorgeous chains for this holiday season. Let’s get crafting.

Items required

  • Wrapping paper
  • Scissors
  • White glue
  • Glitter or other decorative items (optional)

Directions

  1. Cut the paper into strips. 1 inch by 6 inches is a good size for kids and perfect for larger chains for doorways and ceilings. For tree garlands make narrow and short strips.
  2. Set the paper in piles, so a pattern can be made from the various wrappings.
  3. Put glue on one end and loop the piece back to form a ring. Putting the pattern on the outside.
  4. Insert another piece of paper through the ring, then put glue on one end and loop around to make the second link.
  5. Continue until you have reached your desired length or run out of paper.

Remember that when making any craft adult supervision is required and children should not use scissors unsupervised.

The holiday wrapping paper makes the chain look more festive but you can also use festive looking images from magazines if you happen to have some. Remember no piece of paper is too small as the combination of foil gift wrap, traditional or recycled paper and even cut up bags will make the chain more interesting. If you want the chain to really stand out you can add glitter to the strips before they are linked together so that they shimmer.

You can also have children write a message, holiday greeting or their list for Santa on the underside of the strips, and add to it every year. This will make the chain not only a family heirloom, but it will show the progression of their handwriting and holiday wishes every year.

This eco-friendly craft for kids can really be used to celebrate any holiday using the appropriate wrapping paper

Happy Holiday crafting.
