Archive for eco friendly life

Adapting an eco friendly lifestyle doesn’t have to be the extreme image of single-handedly saving the Earth.  It can be something as simple as becoming more in tuned to what the ingredients of what you put in and on your body or use around your home.  Or becoming aware of how precious our natural resources and wild life are and taking to preserve them.

The following is a quote from Jennifer Anniston talking about the changes she’s made and awareness she’s come to in leading an eco friendly lifestyle for herself.

Jennifer Aniston:

“Some things are important for the world to know…like how long I shower. Seriously. I take a three-minute shower. I even brush/wash — brush my teeth while I shower. Here’s why: I learned that every two minutes in the shower uses as much water as a person in Africa uses for everything in their life for a whole day — drinking, bathing, cooking, and cleaning — everything! When you become aware of all the things you do,

Green Food Court Key in Ecofriendly Living Goals

Since May 2009, Oakville Place Food Court has been providing food court customers with the choice of washable plastic or disposable plates.  It’s a new program to the Greater Toronto Area (and possibly Canada but correct me if I’m wrong) and it appears to be a hit with customers who appreciate having an ecofriendly living choice.

According to an article in the Toronto Star, Jason Miller spent an hour observing customers dining at any of the food court’s 10 eateries and not a single disposable plate was chosen.  There were take-out containers requested by customers opting to eat elsewhere but for in-court diners, reusable was the way to go.  Estimates from eatery employees put the number at 9 out of 10 customers opting for reusable.  That equates to anywhere from 500 to 1000 plates per day being diverted from landfills.  If you have any concern with reusing plastic plates you can put your mind to rest.  The plates are washed and sterilized before being restocked.

The food court program is part of a strategy of creating a mall that is more in-line with ecofriendy living.  Their ultimate goal is to achieve a 50% reduction in waste going to landfill by next year.  Very honourable.
Hopefully more malls will take heed and adapt their own green initiatives.  If Oakville Place is any indication, ecofriendly living is catching on.  Consumers need only be presented with the option.  As Martha would say, it’s a good thing.

A Common Sense Approach to Ecofriendly living and saving money!Soji LED Solar Lanterns

1. Invest in a barrel to collect rainwater from your downspouts. This water can then be used to water any and all outdoor plants.
2. Plant some native trees in your yard. By spending some money on trees, you not only shade your house so you can use less AC, but you also help to absorb CO2 in the air.
3. Rotate your car tires on a regular basis. Keeping your tires inflated to the right PSI and rotated regularly saves fuel.
4. Have a small yard? Why not try a push lawnmower.  Cut your lawn while you work out.
5. Install outdoor solar lights. Instead of lighting the path to your front door using electricity, try some solar lights that charge all day and light up all night.  There are some great ones on the market now.  I recently saw some lanterns that were beautiful.  Check out the picture on the top right of this blog for an example by Soji to see what I mean.  Ecofriendly living in style.
6. When painting, choose low or no VOC paints. Volatile Organic Compounds are what makes paint smell so bad and makes it hard to breath. By choosing low or no VOC paint, it’s healthier for your home and yourself and the price difference is nominal.

With a little forethought and ingenuity great change can happen, one small step at a time.  You just need a little elbow grease sometimes.  It’s about rethinking ideologies and seeking out more pure, simple ways.  Ecofriendly living is all about embracing a return to the basics.

If you have any ways to share, please feel free.  We are always looking for new eco friendly living ideas!!
