Archive for eco-friendly clothing

Patagonia, Inc have long been one of the most established names in eco-friendly clothing, the company founded in 1972 have always focused on outdoor wear with an emphasis on hiking, biking, cycling, swimming and surfing. It was fairly natural that they would be one of the earliest companies to lend lasting support to environmental initiatives both in their product line but also in the practices of the company. They’ve been involved with donating 1% of their total sales to environmental groups since 1985 over which time more than $25 million has been donated to different organizations. They also co-founded the ‘alliance 1% For the Planet’  for like-minded businesses and won the 2008 ‘Eco-Brand of the Year’.

Perhaps more importantly the company has strict environmental practices in place when it comes to the products that they manufacture, assessing raw materials and considering environmental impact for all products that they sell. The company also takes part in the ‘Common Threads Initiative’ (a  recycling program) and the ‘Conservation Alliance’. The company has now introduced another avenue to support environmental funding with the launch of “Patagonia Music”.

Now their website will sell songs donated by artists for 99 cents each with the entire proceeds from each sale going to an environmental cause just as selected by the artist. The launch will feature 22 tracks by different artists and then a further four songs will be added on a weekly basis. In addition to downloads the compilations also be available as physical CDs (remember them?) at retail outlets.

More than 100 artists have already elected to contribute music to the campaign including Pearl Jam, Los Lobos, Drive By Truckers, Ziggy Marley, Maroon 5 and many more. The founder and owner of Patagonia stated in a press release:

“Patagonia is hopeful other musicians will see that by just donating a song they can easily provide their favorite environmental group with a new stream of financing.”

It’s a novel way for artists to support a cause that their fans will embrace while paying more than lip service to environmental issues. Now that the campaign has launched you can find out more plus purchase and download songs via the Patagonia.com website, an iPhone app or directly via each artists website in association with the company.

We tend to read numerous stories about climate change if it impacts where we live or regions we are most familiar with, most specifically detailed coverage of floods and droughts or extreme temperatures seems to be focused upon North America, Europe or occasionally Australia. That’s probably more a reflection of our media than the actual events happening around the world as northern China is currently experiencing the most extreme drought conditions seen in generations. Much of the northern third of the giant nation which is at the center of its crop growing region is dry and arid this year with the earth cracking from drought. Numerous dams in the region provide no function at present as there is no water to hold back or electricity to be generated. Some of what is normally the most fertile part of the country has seen crops either greatly reduced or completely lost due to the lack of rain. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization said last month that 12.75 million acres of China’s 35 million acres of wheat fields had been affected by the drought.

China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of wheat and is typically self-sufficient in that regard but 2011 looks to be a year where they will have to import enough grain to meet demand. The Chinese government have responded by investing $1 billion toward emergency activity to combat the drought primarily by a frantic commitment to dig wells although that only provides a temporary solution, the real solution can only come with the return of more typical rainfall. The hope is that this year is just a rare occurrence and not a lasting impact of the changing climate, however in the meantime many rivers are completely dry and cities in the north are ever more reliant on underground water to meet the populations needs.

The country is already considering long-term solutions to the problems caused by the three factors of; a more urban population, a growing population plus the existing drought conditions. China has significant water available in the South with numerous large rivers that run west to east but these lay nearly 700 miles from where the need is greatest. The country has embarked upon an amazing scheme to transfer water via pipes and canals from the South to the North in what would be one of the largest engineering projects ever undertaken, but needless to say the task which is estimated will cost China some $60 billion has already begun.

When people ask about the cost of climate change, or the need for investment in more environmentally friendly practices the doubters often say ‘it’s not needed’ or that ‘the cost isn’t justified’ but when we as a people need to divert the needed water from huge rivers nearly 1000km to sustain populations (at an outrageous cost) surely the real cost is ever more apparent? Nor is it acceptable to say that its ‘China’s problem’ – it is our global problem and climate change with the resultant costs and environmental impacts will continue to manifest in new and challenging ways. By definition that is a shared burden.

She’s far more than just the daughter of a Beatle although her last name certainly carries some clout and Stella McCartney has forged her own extremely successful career as a fashion designer that has grown significantly in the last 10 years for the 39 year old. What’s more Stella holds environmental matters in great esteem and has dedicated a great deal of her ingenuity and time to trying to better the planet both through increased awareness but also in the causes she supports as well as the items she sells. McCartney has launched a brand new website this week that looks to combine both her flair for fashion and her dedication to making the world a greener place.

While the site of course provides a selection of McCartney’s fashion and accessories including specially commissioned winter collections and a preview of her Summer 2011 work she also wanted the site to reflect a sense of who she is and the values that she holds to be important. After making your decision about the clothing (to purchase or just enjoy looking at her designs) she hopes that the site will also provide a doorway to green issues that perhaps customers haven’t yet considered and may encourage support for shared concerns. While the store provides easy navigation and previews of the clothing the sections that are especially worth looking at are ‘Stella’s World’ and her ‘Green Me’ pages on the site.

In these McCartney shares daily green tips with respect to her environmental philosophies in the “Green Me” section. Each provides a combination of stories and special features about green issues and shares the designer’s philosophies as well as encouraging people to take part and make a difference. The messages are artfully presented and you sense that her heart is as committed to her cause as it evidently is to her work. She shares her support for animal welfare, meatless monday and eco-friendly fashion underlined with her own participation. It is a really busy time for McCartney who celebrates a decade of her own line of fashion next year and will also be very involved as the creative director during the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics in conjunction with the Adidas Team. It would be hard to image Stella providing a more lasting effort to the memory of her mother Linda McCartney, herself a keen environmentalist and animal rights activist right up until her death in 1998. Hard to imagine that it has been that long.
