Archive for eco awareness

We’re just about to end another year and we wanted to take this time to thank you for all of your visits to the Planet Forward ‘Sustainable Scribe’ blog over the last 12 months. It’s been an interesting year for all of us who are concerned with the environment and understanding our part in changing the future. On the plus side I think it’s safe to say that eco-awareness is higher today than it ever has been and I’m sure a year from now that trend will continue. There are so many different ways that we can each contribute to improving the environment and the decisions we make on a daily basis really do have an impact. Whether it’s making sure we do we can to reduce our energy consumption by switching off lights and adjusting the thermostat, or doing away with plastic bags by grabbing yourself a reusable one – each gesture carries significance and will continue to snowball the positive change that we all need to be part of.

wind-farms-eco-newsThe recent climate conference in Cancun ends the year on a high note with governments agreeing in principle upon the emissions standards that will take us through the next 10 years. Consumers are becoming more savvy and aware of how their buying habits can change not just the local community but also the environment thousands of miles away. Environmental disasters such as the BP oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico hopefully woke up many people to the fact that new sources of fuel that are renewable must be more than a dream but a shared ambition for the next generation. Corporate Responsibility has never been so highly valued. Technology continues to provide fast track advances to electric and hybrid vehicles, wind-farms, solar energy and biofuels – each of which gradually move a greater percentage of us towards a carbon neutral environment. Meat consumption is being more carefully considered by millions due to the environmental impacts. Scientists are working round-the-clock to give us more information about global warming, deforestation and pollutants in the environment and the impacts that they hold. Schools are beginning to teach environmental programs as standard curriculum, while a six-year-old points at me and says ‘can we recycle this?’.

The information is there if people care to read it, politicians are understanding that a green policy must be part of their platform and be paid far more than lip service. The green economy that we’ve all heard so much about is beginning to make a difference not just in revitalizing old industry but in creating jobs and helping the environment. The understanding of and concern for the environment has come so far in recent years but we are still just pioneers on the global stage. 50 years from now the decisions that were made in the first 20 years of this century will either be providing inspiration to those who are benefiting from the changes that we made, or cursing our lack of progress when we still had time to make a difference.

I hope you’ve enjoyed each of our 250 or so posts in 2010 and we look forward to spending time in 2011 with you also.

Hello again and welcome back to the blog. I’ve been primarily posting about other topics recently but I wanted to get back to the green gazette, it allows me and therefore you to read about a wider variety of news stories about eco-inventions, innovations and ideas.

I noted that an older story was attracting some interest and that we wrote it a few months before the idea became a reality. You may be interested to know that the Plastiki expedition is finally on the high seas. Plastiki is the name of a project based on eco-research about the oceans that will be taking place on a vessel constructed from approximately 12,500 plastic 2 liter bottles. The idea has been 4 years in the planning so we were excited to learn that the ship is now three days into their voyage. To demonstrate how green this experiment is, you can keep current on the progress of the mission via their blog – the laptops are powered via exercise bikes on board. You can learn all about the mission via their

main site, especially interesting is their command center which allows you to track the progress of the boat. So far they’ve traveled 179 nautical miles in 3 days to the Southwest.

I’ve always seen Las Vegas as ground zero when it comes to energy wastage and the last place I’d expect to find eco-concerns being on the radar. Staying high above the strip and gazing out at the neon makes you wonder if electricity grows on trees such is the visual excess of the gambling mecca. As a result this story came as quite a welcome surprise, as I learned that a group that owns The Venetian, The Sands Expo Centre and The Palazzo have started an eco initiative called Eco 360. Impressively the Palazzo earned full LEED certification in 2008, the program would result in sufficient energy saving to power 6,500 homes if the targets laid out are reached.

I’ve never climbed to 9,000 feet when visiting Switzerland (I was quite happy down in the valleys) but if I ever did I now know where it would be

very tempting to stay. The new eco-friendly Monte Rosa Hut, at 2810 metres, is now open to guests who want to stay at the top of the Alps. The remarkable structure is being labeled ‘the mountain hut of the future’ but it sounds like far more than a hut to me. The building encompasses 5 floors with 18 guest rooms and up to 120 beds. It sounds essentially to be an eco-hostel with the requisite washrooms and showers that you would expect.  The unique building has been nicknamed ‘Bergkristall’ (mountain crystal) as the entire structure resembles a large glass crystal and better still the structure is more than 90 percent energy self-sufficient. The building, replaces an old hut located nearby and was designed to use solar technology for most of its energy and heat requirements. The Monte Rosa hut resides in the shadow of the Matterhorn, the most famed peak in the Swiss Alps.

Best Green Videos (part one)

Posted by: Tim | Comments (2)

If a picture is worth a thousand words then what value would you place on a well made video? One of the most exciting things about the internet (or redundant if you tire of seeing puppies doing cute tricks) is the very viral nature of the medium. When it comes to green campaigns the playing field of awareness has been leveled in many respects due to the growth of online video. A smaller marketing video with a television budget for just a small market TV region can reach all of North America or indeed the world. The impact of video via humour, creativity or emotive facts can create a buzz online relatively quickly and underneath the laughs or the fury a film can cause is the message. Eco-awareness is a mission of education and a call to action, naturally a 90 second video can convey a message that will create a greater impact than a 1,200 word essay dependent on your audience.

I’ve spent a good deal of time looking at videos that have created an impact but more importantly stop to make you think about the message so in an effort to bring you a few smiles and share some great eco-videos I wanted to launch into the first four for you to vote on.

2. Harrison Ford’s message about the rain forests

3. Mr. Wind, a favourite of mine since the first day I saw it

4. So obvious and simultaneously innovative, Worm Poop!

If the videos above stirred some interest from you I also wanted to provide a little more information about each:

  • ‘Clean Coal’ was directed by the famed Coen Brothers as a direct message about the concerns with clean coal and was produced for This is reality.org.
  • Harrison Ford’s appearance was on behalf of Prince Charles’ rainforest  initiative The Prince’s Rainforest Project.
  • Mr Wind was created by German alternate energy leader Epuron.
  • Worm poop is the key ingredient behind products being manufactured by Terracycle a small New Jersey based manufacturer of 100% recycled plant food products. It’s really quite fascinating as this longer video shows.

So now we need your help. Please vote for one video and one video only for the inaugural winner of our first ‘Best Green Video’ election! We’ll try and do this more often. Polls close Feb 3.

Please select the best Green video

  • Mr. Wind (82%, 9 Votes)
  • Harrison Ford's waxing (18%, 2 Votes)
  • Clean coal air freshener (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Worm Poop (0%, 0 Votes)

Total Voters: 11
