live-green-toronto-festival2This past week Planet Forward was on scene as an exhibitor at the Live Green Toronto Festival.  The event was organized by the City of Toronto which showcased hundreds of green products and services ranging from reusable bottles to renewable energy.

The weather was on our side as thousands showed up in their quest toward a greener lifestyle.  The festival was in the heart of Toronto at Yonge and Dundas Square.  They actually shut down Yonge Street!  Yonge Street became “green” street as Mayor Miller welcomed visitors.  There was awesome live music, earth-friendly kids’ activities, and tons of organic foods to sample as you walked down Yonge Street to shop eco-friendly products or learn more about living green. The festival was free for anyone in attendance.

The Planet Forward booth was located right on Yonge Street and our eco-neighbors were Arthur’s Juice and Raindance Cosmetics.  Other exhibitors included the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Livclean carbon offset solutions, NOW magazine, The Zero Point, Toronto Water, Bullfrog Power, Zip Car and many more.

earth-friendly-kids-partyLast month, I wrote about my son’s impending first birthday.  For those that read the blog, you will recall my trepidation about stepping out and throwing an earth friendly kids birthday party and still being considered a cool Mom.

As expected, eco-friendly options did not stack the shelves at our local party supply store. However, rather than succumb to the pressure to follow suit, or to fall victim to the lure of convenience, I stuck to my guns.  I did not purchase the newest trend in themed table cloths, sesame street napkins, sponge bob hats or backyardagin plates, despite how cute.   Instead, as vowed, I opted for originality and came up with the little cowboy theme which allowed me to stay true to my mission to throw an earth friendly kids birthday party.

Here are 7 ideas that I put into play to help give my son an earth friendly kids birthday party that he will appreciate one day:

7 Green Tips For Organizing An Earth Friendly Kids Birthday Party

earthcakeAs my son’s very first birthday approaches, I consult friends to see what types of parties they had for their kids or if they’ve ever considered an earth friendly kids birthday party. What I found was a wide range of ideas of what a birthday should be.  So, does a first time Mom just follow suit, or is it ok to plan an earth friendly kids birthday party and still be cool?

Although true, an earth friendly kids birthday party is not topping the charts in terms of the most popular theme at the party supply store, I can`t help but cringe when I think of the enormous mounds of garbage generated from the wrapped presents and boxes, streamers and themed tablecloths, plates, napkins and cups.  So after searching through magazines and browsing the internet, I found that I do not need to sacrifice the planet in order to throw a great bash for my son`s first birthday.
