The reality is that anyone in the limelight has the media attention or political relevance to get their opinions heard so why not exploit that with a worthy cause like the environment? Awareness is essential to help combat climate change and if Leonardo DiCaprio has to say it for it to resonate with people, then I say talk it up Leo. Ed Begley Jr. has been doing it for years and he is the pioneer for many actor/environmentalists out there today to aspire to. We searched around for some eco-friendly quotes from famous actors, environmental activists and world leaders and the results were both insightful and motivating:
“If we want to move towards a low-polluting, sustainable society, we need to get consumers to think about their purchases.” (David Suzuki)
“By employing the intelligence of natural systems we can create industry, buildings, even regional plans that see nature and commerce not as mutually exclusive but mutually coexisting.” (Brad Pitt)

“The supreme reality of our time is…the vulnerability of our planet.” (John F. Kennedy)
“We all have to do our part to raise awareness about global warming and the problems we as a people face in promoting a sustainable environmental future for our planet.” (Leonardo DiCaprio)
“I feel more confident than ever that the power to save the planet rests with the individual consumer.” (Denis Hayes, Chair, Earth Day Network)
“Recycling just seems like the right thing to do, I mean really, it makes us responsible for the messes that we make. It’s all about just picking up after yourself, not shoving our trash in our oceans and streams. We might as well reuse it before we lose it.” (Ed Begley Jr.)
“A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people.” (Theodore Roosevelt)
“The best way to make a contribution in fashion is to promote the idea that a fundamental interest in preserving the environment is itself fashionable.” (Giorgio Armani)

Keeping track of all the new ecofriendly words being thrown around nowadays can be a daunting task that can easily make you feel left out of the loop. Our Lexicon will attempt to make you hip to the new “green” word on the street. This volume deals with plastics and defining some of the most common good and bad types in our daily lives.
First let’s start with the basics. Plastics are classified by their “resin identification code” which is a number from 1-7 which represents a different level. The resin identification code is normally etched/imprinted on the bottom of your container inside the recycling symbol.
What To Buy:
- #2 HDPE, #4 LDPE and #5 PP: These three types of plastic are your best choices. They transmit no known chemicals into your food and they’re generally recyclable; #2 is very commonly accepted by municipal recycling programs, but you may have a more difficult time finding someone to recycle your #4 and #5 containers.
- #1 PET: Fine for single use and widely accepted by municipal recyclers; avoid reusing #1 water and soda bottles, as they’re hard to clean, and because plastic is porous, these bottles absorb flavours and bacteria that you can’t get rid of.
- PLA: plastics made from renewable resources such as corn, potatoes and sugar cane and anything else with a high starch content; although you can’t recycle these plant-based plastics, you can compost them in a municipal composter or in your backyard compost heap.
