North American Idling Is The Opposite Of Green Living

carexhaust460x276Not only is unnecessarily idling your car not eco friendly, but it’s just plain disrespectful to the precious planet we’re desperately trying to protect.  I can’t even begin to tell you how much it irks me to see cars running while no one is in it or when someone is idling waiting to pick up a friend.  Obviously, at a traffic light you may not shut off your ignition, but heck, you can every other time.  I just saw 2 parked cars last night, idling away as they went into a local store and I was infuriated by the ignorance.  And how about ‘warming up the car’ idling, people idling while they wait at a drive thru, or even gridlocked traffic idling.

When you’re idling, is it really so inconvenient for you to turn the ignition and shut off your car?   Geez, when people are not eco friendly they are so blatantly lazy about it.  Turning that key to off is an extremely low-level commitment in the name of mother earth, don’t you think?  Consider the fact that you are burning fossil fuels and emitting carbon dioxide when you’re not even going anywhere!!! To the people who exit their car and leave it idling, I’m comfortable saying, how dare you?  Are you living under a rock and don’t know that carbon dioxide is the most significant greenhouse gas linked to global climate change and pollution? 3 Simple Tips For The Eco Friendly Pet

im000043I just got a new puppy and I was thinking about ways to go green with his training and daily living.  It is possible to raise your pet with an eco-friendly approach and here are 3 simple tips to start getting your pet going green:

1) Start with an organic dog food.  Most pet food suppliers offer an organic product that doesn’t include animal by-products like some of the high profile grocery store brands.  Yes, it’s a bit more expensive, but I don’t want my dog eating chicken feet, undeveloped eggs, or animal heads which are standard meat by products found in tons of different dog foods.  Check the ingredients of your dog’s food and if you see animal or meat by product, your pet could be eating a carcass, head, foot or any animal ‘leftovers’ which contains very little actual meat.

2) Clean up the puppy messes with a natural cleaning product.  I created a natural all purpose cleaner with vinegar, water and a little essential oil from Planet Forward’s MIY Green Home Cleaning Kit and it quickly cleans up any ‘accident’ my puppy has.  My puppy likes to explore and lick things so I’m much more comfortable with an all natural solution that is chemical-free.  Pets have fragile stomachs and exposing them to toxins found in conventional cleaners can be dangerous.

3) Use organic grooming products.  In addition to pet food, there are many organic grooming solutions that still allow your pet to go green without the use of chemicals.   If you want a minimal cost dog shampoo try sprinkling a little baking soda onto your dog’s coat and rub it in with your hands. Then, give them a good brushing and you’ll notice your dog’s coat is clean, shiny and odour-free.  Find 3 more make-it-yourself dog shampoo recipes here.

Common Sense Revolution Towards Stainless Steel Bottlessilver-1l-sport-cap1

Why drink from plastic bottles and risk toxins leaching into your beverage when sustainable stainless steel bottles are toxin-free?  What about the monetary and carbon costs to you and the planet to create that plastic bottle of water for you?  And now, it typically costs over a dollar to get one 500ml bottle of water.  And here’s the kicker, only 3 out of 10 plastic bottles get recycled.  That’s 70% going to landfills and then waiting 450-1000 years to biodegrade.  The numbers are staggering.  It’s time to say no to bottled water and choose a stainless steel bottle filled with tap water from home.

I may be revealing my age, but as a child of the 1970’s I know that bottled water was not accessible like it is today.  I believe only Evian was available back then for about $4 a bottle and I remember joking about how foolish it was to actually pay for water when it’s free at home.  Read More→
