al-gore-david-lettermanThis is the fourth installment in the saga that is the Letterman/Gore interview of 2009. As you are well aware the Nobel Prize laureate was on The Late Show with David Letterman to promote his latest book Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Global Climate Crisis, which is a follow up to his award-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth.  The interview became an eco-friendly Master Class and fodder for discussion.

Unlike the other blogs in this series we will be looking at a host of issues, the first topic of conversation is the extinction of animals. The point was made that when Dave’s son Harry (now six) and Gore’s grandchildren are the age these two men are now, it is predicted that there will be fifty percent fewer species of animals and plants in the world. Gore mentioned the eminent biologist E. O. Wilson, who believes that the most serious crisis facing the earth is extinction.

Apparently, in the history of the world there have been five great extinctions; however, in the past these were cause by something like an asteroid hitting the earth. The last great extinction was about 65 million years ago, so that goes to show that it is truly a rarity. We now find ourselves in the midst of the 6th great extinction, in the history of the planet earth. The main difference this time is that the extinction is not caused by asteroid but by humans.  We can change how we conduct our civilization, we need to become an eco-friendly society, if we want to reverse these effects. Letterman chimed with his dry wit claiming that he felt that an asteroid would be much more exciting.

al-gore-and-david-lettermanYou may have missed it, but former American Vice-President and Noble Prize winner Al Gore made an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman to promote his new book Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Global Climate Crisis.  The result was eco friendly television gold.  This segment was a master class in eco friendly television and current environmental issues and cannot be covered in just one blog. What made the interview so much more than just another boring conversation on the topic was the camaraderie between the pair. Where to begin?

It would be prudent to start with the fact that, just like his Noble Prize money the proceeds from the book are going to The Alliance for Climate Protection. The very first topic is one that has long been the focus of environmental discussion, but has seemingly taken a back seat of late and that is the Ozone Layer. Dave went right to the heart of the issue asking Gore if the hole in the Ozone layer was closed up? Surprising Gore said in the eco friendly television interview, that the Ozone layer was closing. He attributed this environmental success to the fact that world leaders came together with a treaty that was first thought to be a weak move but then toughened up. According to the EPA what Gore was talking about was the “over 190 countries, including the major industrialized nations such as the United States, have signed the 1987 Montreal Protocol, which calls for elimination of chemicals that destroy stratospheric ozone.

bill_maherLate night political talk show host and comedian Bill Maher is nothing if not opinionated.  On his hit HBO show Real Time with Bill Maher, he spoke extensively about a new eco-friendly solution that proves that climate change is real and it needs to be dealt with. This new eco-friendly solution does not use any electricity and needs only minimal maintenance save for the occasional check-up. An added bonus is that almost everyone has all the tools they need to use it.  So what is this new eco-friendly solution that can track and demonstrate climate change? Opening your EYES. Yes, that’s right, open your eyes and look around you. An all natural, no cost, no fuss, eco-friendly solution.

Maher felt that all one needs to do is to open their eyes and look around them to be able to identify the problem with climate change and (hopefully) be motivated to do something about it.
