Soap Making – An Eco-friendly Family Activity

By The Ecolectual

soap-makingHey, were you wondering what to do with those five minutes of spare time you have? While after you have finished composting, repurposing your old jeans, persevering your vegetables (home grown, of course) and dividing up your recycle, why don’t your hand at soap making?  Yes, actually making your own soap! It can be a fun activity for the whole family and something you can use as an eco-friendly teacher or hostess gift.

Making soap is a quick activity as it will only take about thirty minutes, so it will be exciting for kids to have a finished product within an hour. There are many methods but the easiest is the melt and pour. All you need to do is purchase an eco-friendly soap base which comes in aloe, hemp, honey (many more varieties at www.brambleberry.com). Then follow the easy steps posed on www.teachsoap.com. If you want video tutorials you can go to www.soap-queen.blogspot.com. You should know that an eco-friendly handmade soap lasts substantially longer than store bought soaps, as long as they are kept on a slotted soap dish. When making your own soap, you get to control the colour, scent and not to mention chemicals and additives.

For those that say melt and pour simple square soaps are not expressive enough for their soap needs, you can get into more complex soap molds and make them as gifts for family, friends or to sell at the school bazaar. For advanced soap-makers, there is even instructions on how to make a bacon scented-bone-shaped-soap for your favorite pooch (although I still can’t figure out why you would want to).

Once you have mastered the process of creating an eco-friendly soap, you can always move on to the face scrubs, moisturizers, etc.  They are also included in the blogs/websites above.  Now, I forgot to mention there is a tutorial video about making an eco-friendly lip-gloss, remember they make wonderful stocking stuffers. Enjoy!
