Recycled T-Shirt Necklace Eco-friendly Craft
Eco-friendly craft projects are more than just something to help occupy children; they can have a real impact on your life. A green craft should have two main goals; one is that it needs to reuse something that you readily have on had. The second challenge posed to an eco-friendly craft is that should be useful. Taking these two components into consideration, we’re making a necklace by repurposing an old recycled t-shirt. That’s right we’re turning a simple t-shirt into a piece any fashionista would be proud to wear. The t-shirt necklace is a fun project that will enhance your wardrobe. This chic and trendy craft idea came by way of the granddame of good things, Martha Stewart at Whole Living. Let’s get crafting.
Tools and Materials:
• Soft cotton T-shirt
• Ruler
• Scissors or rotary cutter
T-Shirt Necklace How-To:
1. Lay the shirt on a flat surface; cut off the hem and discard. Then cut the body of the shirt horizontally into strips approximately 3/4 of an inch long. (They will actually be loops.)
2. One at a time, pull the loops open and stretch until the fabric starts to curl. Stack the loops on top of one another so that all the T-shirt side seams are in the same spot.
3. Once you have the thickness you desire, wrap the seams with a scrap piece of fabric (about 6 inches long) from the same shirt. Tuck the end of the scrap under itself.
This t-shirt necklace will give you all the impact of a statement piece of jewelry without the hefty price tag. Larger pieces, even if they are made out of t-shirt, are expensive; this is a way to save some green while being green. In fact, this eco-friendly craft is so inexpensive to make that you could assemble multiple necklaces in different colours. Everyone has an old t-shirt or even a cotton tank top that they don’t wear anymore, why not turn it into something fabulous? In fact, you could even mix colours if you want something different from the monochromatic look. Another way to customize this green craft would be to use a larger t-shirt so you have a longer necklace.
You can watch Martha showing Queen Latifah how to craft a unique necklace using a recycled T-shirt at Whole Living.
When it comes to an eco-friendly craft like this one, there is no wrong way to go about its completion. So have fun, be creative, and repurpose some old clothes. Happy crafting.
