Promoting Social Responsibility R.I.P. Joe Strummer
By AngelaPromoting Social Responsibility – An ode to my friend Joe
I grew up in the 80’s so we were all about supporting and promoting social responsibility. We were nothing if not about a cause but to me, any discussion about it should start and end with Joe Strummer. Joe was the front man of the punk band The Clash and he lived the adage that personal was political. He opposed any system that oppressed people or progress whoever and wherever they were and put it to an amazing riff to boot. His gutty voice and passion politicized a punk movement and gave the blank generation meaning and purpose. London Calling was my first introduction to the man who would soon become the coolest friend I never met. I wasn’t sure why London was drowning or who the zombies of death were but I knew I wanted to continue listening to find out. Through Joe, I learned of globalization, consumerism, capitalism, Marxism, race riots and police brutality. I never received a high school history credit but I knew about the Spanish Revolution, the Cold War and who Fredrico Lorca was. He led a musical rebellion that left everything forever changed. I miss Joe. In this age where people are more comfortably defined by their specialty coffee order than by their social or environmental awareness, I miss him even more.
Satta Massagana for Joe. You were always promoting social responsibility way more than you ever did yourself. I’ll try to do you justice bud.

Bono may think U2 is the biggest band in the world but The Clash is the only band that mattered

I love this blog. Maybe it is because you do not need to be a fan of the clash to get what is being said, or maybe it is because I was a fan. Nevertheless, if it doesn’t strike a nerve, maybe you should read it again!

A good read….RIP Joe!!!

Or are you taking orders?
Are you going backwards
Or are you going forwards?”

A great post. I appreciate The Clash were not always right on the mark politically but more importantly they asked us to seek our own truth.
That was vital….we really need the same thing again now.
Thanks for writing this.

What a fantastic line:
“In this age where people are more comfortably defined by their specialty coffee order than by their social or environmental awareness, I miss him even more.”
The glorious thing about Joe is he recognized others who blazed trails before him, and as a result inspired some today to continue the legacy.
I loved this..thanks!
