The Sweet Stench Of My Organic Ecofriendly Garden
Michelle Obama plants the first White House ecofriendly garden
In my never-ending quest to make my organic ecofriendly garden thrive, I went in search of organic plant food. There was a seemingly endless aisle of products; unfortunately they weren’t all organic. It came down to one choice and luckily it was a name I am very familiar with; Miracle-grow.
Having had a good experience with their ecofriendly organic topsoil, I figured their Organic Plant Food was a safe choice. The instructions said to sprinkle it on the base of the plant, so I aerated the soil and sprinkled it in. After half a row of tomatoes I noticed a slight odor, and it seemed to be coming from the box of organic plant food. I figured it would dissipate and I finished sprinkling it on every pant and then watered them to activate the plant food. The smell seemed a little more prominent now. I could smell it even when it was not on top of a plant. Again I thought this would soon pass.
The next day I went out to tend to the garden and I was hit with a less than pleasant smell. The only way I could describe it is the stench of sewage or polluted beach with a healthy dose of Eau de horse. Did I mention this was not a pleasant smell? After I wiped the tears from my eye, it was then I noticed swarms of flies circling my plants. Now I want it noted that I followed the instructions to the letter and nowhere on the bag does it warn that you might require goggles and a nose plug to garden after using the organic topsoil. I am now faced with the dilemma of what to do with the more than ¾ of a bag that is left. I just don’t know if I have the stomach to do it again.
My only hope is that this ecofriendly organic product works so well that my harvest is well worth all the effort. Here’s hoping that the neighbors don’t complain. Wish me luck.

I work for Scotts Miracle Gro and I found your blog about the Miracle Gro Organic Plant Food. Just wanted to assure you that in time the smell will dissipate. It is made from feathers and poultry litter, which means to get the food benefits the smell must come with it! It is one of the tradeoffs to going organic. Keep us posted on how this works for your plants!
Thanks for stopping by. The Ecolectual will continue to use Miracle Gro products because of the results. She will keep you posted on its progress in her organic garden. Be sure to come by again to check us out again.
