Howard Stern’s Personal Carbon Footprint Rant

howard-sternWe have all heard that we need to reduce our personal carbon footprint. Simple changes that will help achieve this are taking public transit and flicking off lights when not is use. In actuality both gestures big and small like composting, using stainless steel reusable water bottles and other minimal changes will aid in lowering your personal carbon footprint. Thus, in order to help the environment, we should all do are part.  Most have heard this call to action and gladly/proudly oblige in any way they can to the benefit of future generations. Well, there is one celebrity that is straying from convention because he does not believe in reducing one’s personal carbon footprint.

Who would make such outrageous anti-environmentalist statements in an eco-friendly climate? Well, it is none other than Sirius XM radio Shock Jock, the self-proclaimed King of all media, Howard Stern. The other day on his satellite radio show, The Howard Stern Show, he railed against an initiative for people to leave their cars at home on Tuesday September 22, 2009.  Stern went as far as to say that when he dies he hopes that the one thing he is remembered for is having the largest personal carbon footprint possible and that he did nothing to help reduce in any way. In fact he claims to find ways to increase his personal carbon footprint, so he can achieve this goal. He said he could not give up his car for a day because he is a celebrity and would be accosted on the streets of New York City.

Howard does not care about the state of the environment and said as much, as the effects of his personal carbon footprint will never impact him or his lifestyle. This is all well and good but there are many listeners who do not understand that Stern (we hope) is kidding and that he is only saying these outlandish things to entertain the masses. What is troubling is that those not in on the joke may dismiss any off any notion of being eco-friendly with a flip answer like Stern did.

So, in future please try to be a little more cautious Howard, as you have a lot of influence.  Not everyone is in on the joke.  Far be it from us to advocate censorship ever – we’re fans of the show.  Just remember to please tread lightly when it comes to your personal carbon footprint.
