Adrian Grenier, star of Entourage and advocate for the environment, is being awarded the Eco-Maverick award from Opportunity Green on November 10th, 2011. Grenier co-founded SHFT.com with Peter Glatzer who will also be honoured with the Eco-Maverick award. SHFT.com is a multi-media platform with a mission “to convey a more sustainable approach to the way we live through video, design, art and culture.” Green topics at SHFT cover a variety of areas including, art, architecture, conservation, food, fashion, energy, home/garden and more. SHFT TV includes an original web series called ‘Lighten Up’ which covers bands as they reduce their carbon footprint while on tour. This is the 5th annual Opportunity Green Awards. The Eco-Maverick award “celebrates a member of the entertainment industry who passionately strives to drive environmental efforts.”
Reuters reports some astounding renewable energy news as China wind power capacity could reach 1,000 GW by 2050. In 2010, China had in excess of 41 gigawatts of wind power capacity, but the future looks brighter. “China’s wind power generating capacity, already the world’s largest, could reach 1,000 gigawatts by 2050, a study prepared by a think tank of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) showed on Wednesday.” This would reduce their carbon dioxide emissions “by 1.5 gigatonnes per year, roughly equivalent to the combined carbon dioxide emissions of Germany, France and Italy in 2009, the study from the Energy Research Institute under the NDRC showed.” This would account for 17 percent of China’s electricity output in 2050, it’s currently at 1 percent.
Now for some pop culture green news according to ecorazzi: ‘Back to the Future’ DeLorean to go Electric In 2013. “The announcement came during the DeLorean Motor Company’s biannual DMC headquarters gathering in Houston last weekend. A prototype of the vehicle, expected to go on sale in 2013, was shown off to the public looking very much like the original. According to CEO Steve Wynne, that design choice was intentional. ”I know my market well, and there are certain things we won’t mess with,” he told AutoWeek. “It will keep the stainless-steel exterior. We still want it to be a real car.” A DeLorean Electric Vehicle (EV) sounds awesome to me; could I get an upgrade that includes time travel?
We keep growing: World Population Close to Reaching 7 Billion. “The United Nations Population Fund announced this week that the world’s count of human inhabitants on the planet will surpass 7 billion this month.” The global population is growing at a rate of about 1 billion people every 12 years. “One main cause is improved modern medicine such as the advent of antibiotics, which has extended the average lifespan to 68 years, up from 48 in 1960. Another cause is tied to cultures in which birth control and contraception are either ignored, frowned upon, or considered as outright evil.” As the population continues to increase, we further deplete natural resources, increase pollution, and cause global warming. The global climate crisis is directly impacted by the growing population.
