By Tracy

eco-friendly-craftWelcome back to the Green Macgyver eco-friendly craft series which is all about reusing and designing enjoyable crafts.   This eco-friendly craft for kids is fun and once again, promotes creativity.

In Part VIII of the Green MacGyver eco-friendly craft series, follow these steps to make your own popsicle stick picture frame:

What you need:

  • popsicle-stick-picture-frame8 popsicle sticks
  • Glue
  • Paint of any colour
  • Photograph that you want to Frame
  • Scissors
  • Cardboard (you can use an old cereal box)
  • Yarn if you want to hang your frame
  • Magnet (to adhere to the frame so it can display on the refrigerator)
  • Any of the following items to decorate the frame:  construction paper, yarn, stickers, nuts and bolts, fishing lures, ribbons, small fake flowers, golf tees, puzzle pieces, lace, stamps, wrapping paper, magazine cutouts, etc.

What you do:

  1. Glue the 8 Popsicle sticks with two side-by-side vertically on both sides of the frame, and two side-by-side horizontally on the top and bottom.  After you glue the sticks together, allow time to dry.
  2. Let the child paint the frame and dry completely.
  3. After it’s dry, get creative with any items you choose to decorate.
  4. Cut the cardboard to match the size of the picture frame, then cut your photo (if necessary) to fit inside the frame’s opening.
  5. Glue the photo to the centre of the cardboard.
  6. Glue the cardboard to the popsicle sticks.
  7. To hang your frame, glue a piece of yarn to each of the top 2 corners on the back of the frame . For a magnetic frame, glue a magnet to the back.

And, your child’s custom-made picture frame makes for an excellent gift to give to a family member or friend.  It’s a whole new way to appreciate popsicles with an innovative framed memory of a cherished moment.  This eco-friendly craft is easy to implement for parents and entertaining for kids.  Enjoy!
