Green lifestyles – Ten Reasons For Organic Gardening

organic_gardeningGreen Lifestyles – here’s 10 reasons why you should become an organic gardener:

10. Gardening brings tranquility. What better way to have total control when the chaos of everyday life gets to be too much, than to garden?  Pulling weeds and can be very therapeutic…..trust me!

9. Landscaping your green lifestyles does not mean you only grow shrubs and flowers. This is a fabulous way to decorate you backyard.  Why just use flowers, when vegetables make a beautiful and edible addition to any garden space.

8. Anecdotes: Something that is oddly almost as wonderful as getting a great crop is having some trouble.  Why you may ask?  Well, it’s because of the stories that come out of it.  Even if you do not have a green thumb, the trials and tribulations of gardening can produce fun anecdotes.

7.  Green lifestyles gardening saves money.  If all goes well, you will get a great return on the seeds, plants etc that you needed to start your garden.  Also, you will save on your food budget as vegetables are expensive so why not grow your own?

6. Set a green lifestyles example for future generations.  A garden is a fun way to get kids eating and thinking healthy.  Take Michelle Obama’s lead and plant an organic garden so that kids can help understand about eating fresh healthy locally grown food. Who knows maybe they will even inherit a love of gardening even if it’s only a planter of herbs.

5.  It’s a hobby, something you enjoy more and more as you go on. After a season or two of gardening you will find yourself missing your homegrown goods and tending to the plants in the cold winter months.  Gardening can be a fun and easy way to be green. This is because you will be buying fewer fruits and vegetables from other countries, thus reducing your carbon footprint.

4. Preserve your bounty.  You can take your harvest and turn it into seasoning oils, tomato sauce and not mention you can also freeze fresh vegetable stews. This is a great way to enjoy the fruits of you labor long after the season has passed. In addition, think about the money you can save by drying your own spices and seasonings.

3. The joy of harvesting. There is nothing better than the simple pleasure of picking the fixing for a salad (onions, lettuce, tomatoes) right before a meal.

2. Exercise, one hour of gardening can burn up to 350 calories. This is great for those that loath the gym.  Also, unlike the gym where you can choose not to go, the garden demands that you tend to it.

1. Celebrate green lifestyles by wowing friends and family by bringing them over some fresh produce.  This is also a great way to bring something easy to party as you can bring a fresh salad without a trip to the grocery store. Your inner circle will not only benefit from fresh produce but also the goodies that you make with your own fresh ingredients.  Zucchini cake anyone?
