Green Gazette (Issue 11) White House goes green, eco boxes and delivery vans

By Tim

Hello again, I must say it’s mornings like these where I feel so thankful how beautiful nature is - and it reinforces the importance of protecting our environment. I went past our nearest golf course this morning (we are surrounded by them) the greens were a perfect shade of green, the sky was brilliant blue and the cool morning sun reflected on the lakes at the course. The snow geese even looked happier than usual. It’s a gorgeous place to live from October until May and I hate seeing the relentless changes toward longer and hotter summers here in the desert. I hope the generations to come don’t have to battle the level of climate change that many predict.

I’ve a few green tales to share so please stick around for a little while. My first story is rather appropriate as the White House launched (this Monday) us-whitehouse-logoa grass roots campaign to fully commit to sustainable practices for all government agencies. As President Obama signed this into law (the website has video footage) the White House launched an official site for all Federal Employees to make green recommendations. The website has all the ideas detailed and in just 72 hours over 1,000 sustainable ideas have been launched. When you realise the USA consumes the most energy of any nation on earth and the US Federal Government has over 1.8 million employees (!!) it’s more than a drop in the ocean. It’s an exciting initiative and the US government’s commitment to developing sustainable practices throughout their agencies is both impressive and beneficial. Suggestions are open to be submitted by any and all federal employees and then voted upon (and eventually will be put into practice). Greening up the White House, you have to like that.

How about a quick film? This is worth 5 minutes of your time, as an Indiana based company has designed the most eco-friendly delivery van I’ve ever seen. It’s a fact of modern life that commercial vehicles are going to be usedbrightback for many years to come and the fleet sizes used by food and beverage companies (for example) may astound you. As a result if a company such as this can make positive inroads into the commercial market the benefits would be substantial. They are seeking government grant status to lower the vehicle costs which I do hope happens. Bright Automotive’s vehicle is a plug in hybrid commercial van that has been designed with green issues in mind from every aspect of the vehicle. The ultimate environmental benefits and operational savings are both to be applauded. Let’s hope the next generation of soda and chip delivery trucks look like this!

I wrote a story recently about a chain of ‘green’ pizzerias that were doing sterling work. I wonder if they’ve heard about this new invention? You guessed; an eco-friendly pizza box. The idea is that wonderful combination of simplicity and effectiveness and it’s for those two reasons that I can see it catching on. The more awareness people gather about how much we waste (with no need) the better the likelihood of small changes gathering in popularity. Though how small is this? Considering how many pizzas are consumed the potential benefits are once again not to be ignored. The special box is from 100% recycled material / the box can be broken down and used as serving plates or a storage container. The full list of benefits are on their website - perhaps you’ll get a delivery in one soon?
