Eco Friendly Living Eco Friendly Loving

Eco Friendly Living And Loving Just A Flawed Click Awayeco-heart

Move over Lavalife, eharmony and match.com because there’s a new kid on the block and www.ecodaters.com aims to take eco friendly living to a whole new dimension. A dimension where green-loving singles could find other like-minded souls and live happily ever after.  A great concept but let’s not rush to judgment quite yet.

There I was all excited about this great new site that seemed to have both an eco and sexual friendliness about it.  Like earth loving man seeks same.  Or green girl seeks both.  Whatever.  They’re eco-minded and I could care less what two consenting adults do in their bedroom as long as children and farm animals are not involved but I digress.  So I’m going through their mission statement which includes:  “We created EcoDater because it represents the best of what we see and experience in this world – community, connectivity, friendship, and a respect for the natural life. It’s our modest but noble effort to make a positive impact on people’s lives, and to leave this world a little bit better than how we found it.”  Totally kumbaya, right?  Well I returned to their homepage full of feel-good and ready for more and guess what’s staring back at me? Nature couple 2009 positioned on a natural backdrop all fresh faced and smiling proudly showing off their….PLASTIC WATER BOTTLE!!!!  The poster couple for eco dating are drinking bottled water.  Oh the humanity.  I felt so betrayed.  That is so not kumbaya.  How could all that greenness and love come to such a crushing halt?  Now I don’t want to come off as some raging militant environmentalist.  I try my best but eco-perfection is still merely a glimmer in the distance for me but come on.  A plastic bottle?  How does that get through as being representative of anything even remotely resembling eco friendly living?  Isn’t using a reusable bottle green living 101?

Even though that whole site said all the right things, the presence of that one bottle tainted it for me.  That one picture made all those great words suddenly less so.  I guess a picture really is worth a thousand words and in this age of heightened awareness, I think that value is compounded.

I sent them an email commenting on their erroneous picture choice.  I’ll have to keep checking back to see if they listen to their eco-audience.

June 5, 2009 @ 3:30pm - I am THRILLED to report that the plastic bottle has been swapped out for a reusable one.  It’s not a Planet Forward bottle but it wasn’t about that.  Wow.  We do have the power to change things.  Maybe that how it happens.  One picture at a time.  Kudos to ecodaters.com.  Happy green dating to all!
