Repurposing Denim = eco-chic
In tough times there is no need be seen in last year’s fashion, when you can DIY for less with your own trendy look using what you have. Do you know how to make your own eco-friendly clothes? Just repurpose a piece from your own closet!
Eco-friendly clothes can be an easy way to express your creativity/individuality while saving money and contributing to a healthier planet. One of the easiest pieces to make eco-friendly clothes out of are jeans.
The first thing you can do is making your jeans into denim shorts. It is easy – just cut the jeans as long or as short as you want them. Then you can fray the bottom by pulling at threads with a straight needle or put in a simple hem for a neater look. You can also purchase trim and have a stripe of color to elongate your legs.
The second way to make you own eco-friendly clothes by repurposing your old jeans to have new life is by fraying them. This season everyone will be wearing their torn, ripped and frayed designer jeans, so why not become your own designer. Grab a pair of jeans that you recently fell out of love with and repurpose them – you know they are begging to be worn again. Put a board in one leg and with a utility or x-acto knife, make a cross teaching pattern, or make small cuts of make a big rip. Do this up and down both legs and on the back pockets until you achieve the look you want. It might be helpful to find a picture to match or for inspiration. There is a fine line between trendy and messy but you are in control of where that line is.
The final tip for how to give new life to old jeans is to fade them. One again put your wood board or a really old towel or rag, stuffed in leg of the jeans and take a sponge and carefully wipe/dab/blot watered down bleach (4 parts water 1 part bleach) on the legs. Once again it might help to have an inspiration picture so that you don’t end up over doing it. Remember a light touch is best because you can always add but you cannot subtract, when playing with bleach. For a retro 80’s acid wash look you can always increase the amount of bleach in your solution.
These are just a few easy ways to make your own eco-friendly clothes, while saving some green at the critical back to school or off to University/College time. Trends don’t just apply to fashion. By repurposing your old clothes you are sporting the latest in eco-chic and creating your own trends.
