DJ AM Tragedy In Manhattan

dj-amOn Friday August 28, Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein died at the age of 36.  This tragic event occurred almost one year after the plane crash where he and Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker, were the only survivors.

Goldstein, was as well known internationally for his skills as a DJ as he was for the women he has dated, notably Nicole Richie and Mandy Moore. What you probably didn’t know was he also an urban environmentalist.  He was promoted and stood for eco friendly living and was one of the celebrities on the Board of Directors at the Environmental Media Association (EMA).
The EMA’s mission statement is to mobilize “ the entertainment industry in a global effort to educate people about environmental issues and inspire them into action” As an urban environmentalist DJ AM saw the need to get people involved in and raise awareness of environmental issues. The EMA “advises celebrities and entertainment professionals on thought-provoking, attention-getting ways to role model healthy, sustainable lifestyles to the general public. Whether driving a hybrid or alternative fuel vehicle or carrying a canvas bag, EMA encourages celebrities to use their power to inspire environmentally responsible behavior and affect positive change.”

The EMA has an annual awards ceremony that is “devoted to celebrating the entertainment industry’s creative environmental efforts. The EMA Awards honor productions, film and television personalities, musicians and musical tours that convey environmental messages in the most creative and influential ways.” Thus, the EMA wants celebrities to showcase the simple ways one can be an urban environmentalist and still maintain their lifestyle.

Rather than lament the unfortunate death of DJ AM, let’s praise him as the highly skilled, amazing talent he was – judging by the countless testimonials he was also a kind, caring friend to those close to him.  I can only assume caring for the environment was just an extension of that.

He may have only been with us 36 years but he made the most of the time he was here and had a great impact.  You will not be forgotten.

RIP DJ AM
