David Letterman – An Eco-friendly Television Pioneer

By The Ecolectual

david-lettermanLate night talk show host and comic, David Letterman has been put under siege of late but we want to focus on things that actually matter first.  Letterman, in addition to being a great talent is also somewhat of an eco-friendly television pioneer having made a commitment to producing eco-friendly television programming through his production company World Wide Pants.

World Wide Pants, which produces The Late Show with David Letterman, partnered last year with EcoMedia. Rob Burnett, president and CEO of Worldwide Pants said that they “are extremely excited to partner with EcoMedia and look forward to creating [eco-friendly television]/entertainment that will hopefully not only be funny, but will also move viewers toward better, more sustainable practices in everyday life”.  We commend Dave and World Wide Pants for their commitment to the planet.  We hope more production companies follow their lead.

Now I suppose we have to address the hype.  Unless you have been under a rock and that rock does not have wifi, you probably heard about the plot to extort two million dollars out of Letterman. David himself boldly broke the story, with his trademark wit and humor. Since then, the media have been circling everyone connected to World Wide Pants like vultures in the desert. Dave, ever-protective of is privacy has now overtaken fame-mongers Jon and Kate as the lead story on TV, newspapers, and the ever-important blogosphere. On top of that, the speculation and salacious insinuations have pulled news magazines like The Insider down to a new low.  If you saw The Insider’s Michel Jackson coverage, you’ll know that is saying something.

Regardless of how you feel about Letterman’s actions he should be able to deal with such a personal matter in private.  Adultery stats are hard to come by and honest ones are even more difficult but polls put the % at anywhere from 35-55% of marriages experience some form of it.  All he made public was that fact that he was being extorted and then the media took over smearing him for actions that, although lascivious, are not illegal. Some have gone so far to say that he abused his power, but not one person has said that the affairs were not 100% consensual. I think everyone needs to relax and get some perspective and give Dave a break.  Given the current state of affairs economically, environmentally and socially does this really warrant this much attention?  He’s being extorted.  How’s about reporting on the actual story?

Let’s hope that Dave weathers this storm, as we desperately need his brand of humor and environmental sensitivity.  We have welcomed him into our homes for decades and he has entertained us and made us laugh in return. Dave said he has his work cut out for him, so let’s give him some space to get started, and hopefully make some headway.
