pfrace3Last Saturday on August 22nd, 2009, Planet Forward sponsored the Annual Midsummer Night’s Run which is organized in support of the Department of Rheumatology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Planet Forward was thrilled to participate as a Sponsor by providing sustainable stainless steel bottles to each of the participants that finished either the 30 k or the 15 k route.  Stainless steel bottles filled with cold water were handed out as participants crossed the finish line, along with a medal of achievement.  Other sponsors of the event included New Balance and Nicholas Hoare.

Features of the event included the Steamwhistle Midsummer Beer Garden, a B.B.Q. by Dangerous Dan’s, a DJ and a winner’s ceremony.

pfrace2Most notable, however, was the good spirit and positive energy that was brought in by all of the volunteers and participants.  Many dressed in twigs, blossoms, ribbons and bows, and posed to have their picture taken at the costume corner, qualifying them for the costume contest.

The event was a great success and the Planet Forward Team was thrilled to donate their stainless steel bottles to help raise money for the Hospital for Sick Children.

We would like to thank everyone for their emails and kind words.  We will be appearing next at the Live Green Toronto Festival on Sunday August 30th as an exhibitor and the Earth Matters Showcase on September 9th, 2009 at Sunnybrook’s Health Sciences Centre and at the Conscious Food Festival at Toronto’s Historic Fort York on September 26th & 27th.  We hope to see you there.

earth-friendly-kids-partyLast month, I wrote about my son’s impending first birthday.  For those that read the blog, you will recall my trepidation about stepping out and throwing an earth friendly kids birthday party and still being considered a cool Mom.

Well the bash happened on July 18th, and I am proud to report that we did not sacrifice our eco-values in order to score top points for originality and fun.   Just check-out our little cowboy!

As expected, eco-friendly options did not stack the shelves at our local party supply store. However, rather than succumb to the pressure to follow suit, or to fall victim to the lure of convenience, I stuck to my guns.  I did not purchase the newest trend in themed table cloths, sesame street napkins, sponge bob hats or backyardagin plates, despite how cute.   Instead, as vowed, I opted for originality and came up with the little cowboy theme which allowed me to stay true to my mission to throw an earth friendly kids birthday party.

Here are 7 ideas that I put into play to help give my son an earth friendly kids birthday party that he will appreciate one day:

justin-timberlakeIf You Are In Memphis, Why Not Enjoy The Benefits Of Green Living By Teeing-Off At An Eco-Friendly Golf Course.

Miramichi Lakes is the project of singer Justin Timberlake, and it takes his love of golf and eco-values to a new level of green living.

Timberlake purchased the golf course, original named Woodstock Hills, in 2007 and decided to refurbish it using green standards in order to make it a ”green course”.    Renovations have been completed on the re-done 16 million dollar Golf Course which is scheduled to open July 25, 2009, in suburban Memphis, and is said to be one of the few LEED-certified golf courses in the United States.

LEED is an internationally recognized certification rating and accepted benchmark that measurers the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.   LEED provides building owners and operators with the tools they need for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.

When it comes to teaching kids, there is no doubt that since Elmer the Safety Elephant was born, his impact was dramatic. As he spread his message of safety to the streets, he was an instant hit with the kids.

Now, in a modern day effort to teach children the importance of recycling, new mascots have been created.   Unlike Elmer they are not a cute cartoon character with a video message about safety,  but rather,  these new modern day mascots are fully animated and focus on Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Two examples of these are Moby S. Loop which is part of Resource Recovery Fund Board (RRSF), Nova Scotia’s education and awareness team, and Curby the Recycling Robot.
